{"id":10504,"date":"2023-12-05T20:32:34","date_gmt":"2023-12-06T01:32:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/heavensmetalmagazine.com\/?p=10504"},"modified":"2023-12-05T20:33:20","modified_gmt":"2023-12-06T01:33:20","slug":"wytch-hazel-iv-sacrament","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/heavensmetalmagazine.com\/index.php\/2023\/12\/05\/wytch-hazel-iv-sacrament\/","title":{"rendered":"Wytch Hazel: IV: Sacrament"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>And Now for Something Completely Different\u2026<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>For those who have never experienced the music of U.K.\u2019s Wytch Hazel this review of <em>Sacrament<\/em> (the band&#8217;s 4th release) may as well represent a foreign language. However, for those looking for something different, something which doesn\u2019t fit into any kind of common or easily described mold of musical expression \u2026 read on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Wytch Hazel defies comparison. Their unique brand of rock has been around since their debut release <em>Prelude<\/em> (2016), which they followed up with <em>II: Sojourn<\/em> (2018) and <em>III: Pentecost <\/em>(2020). These first 3 releases feature an amalgam of \u201870\u2019s rock and folk\/celtic rock with some classic hard rock leanings, but even that description doesn\u2019t do the music justice. Wytch Hazel plays music you really just have to hear for yourself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, while the musical style doesn\u2019t change much over those first 3 releases, there were those unpopular line-up changes which never sit right with fans. Colin Hendra (vocals\/piano\/organ) is the constant, and drummer Jack Spencer plays on the first 3 releases as well. But otherwise, there is a shuffling of players filling in the ranks, finally settling out on Alex Haslam (guitars) and Andrew Shackleton (bass) on <em>Pentecost<\/em>, which was for me their greatest accomplishment to that point.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Fortunately, most of the foursome remains intact for <em>Sacrament<\/em> \u2013 the exception being Aaron Hay has replaced Spencer on drums. Why do I digress with all this people mess? A testament to a great band is often manifested in how their music is affected by multiple changes in personnel. Thankfully, Wytch Hazel\u2019s music \u2013 at the core \u2013 stands firm to its prototype.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>IV: Sacrament<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Interestingly though, <em>Sacrament<\/em> breaks away from the first 3 releases in a way I can best describe as \u201cmore accessible\u201d to a wider listener base. Now, maybe that statement worries the core fanbase, but it shouldn\u2019t because the magic which makes the music of Wytch Hazel so endearing is still present in abundance on <em>Sacrament<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This time around, there is a purposeful stripped down \u2013 almost pop \u2013 approach for the most part, but the guitar sounds, the vocal timbres are all still very recognizable. The hardest pill to swallow, though, is the drumming change. Spencer played with that Clive Bunker (Jethro Tull) style of jazz meets classical flair, which was part of what made those first 3 releases so great. Hay is mostly playing straight four beats. Fans of the former style may not be too thrilled with <em>Sacrament<\/em>, but, once again, for those looking for something refreshing, these songs are wonderful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Digging Deeper into the Songs<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Right out of the gate, \u201c<strong>The Fire\u2019s Control<\/strong>\u201d establishes not only the more straight-rock approach but also this band\u2019s ability to challenge the listener\u2019s spiritual disposition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-medium-font-size\"><em><strong>\u201cAre you afraid of the fire\/are you afraid of the Holy Spirit? Are you afraid of the fire\/Are you afraid of the fires of Hell?\u201d<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>And in a similar musical vein, the straight rocker \u201c<strong>Angel of Light<\/strong>\u201d shares this sentiment \u2013 the struggle to stay clear of deception and firm in the truth during this age.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-medium-font-size\"><em><strong>\u201cWe have won the war but I have lost this fight\/We\u2019re against a darkness that shows itself as light \u2026 Faithful stand and be faithful\/Prepare for the fight\/He is the Angel\/The Angel of Light\u201d<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The running bass guitar underlying this track is the musical highlight of the song. Hendra\u2019s vocals are mesmerizing because unlike most singers he doesn\u2019t force any power into the effort, these truths just seamlessly flow from his laid-back (dare I say hippie-powered?) approach. Let\u2019s call it \u201csober trippy.\u201d Think Eric Bloom Blue Oyster Cult.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed aligncenter is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"WYTCH HAZEL &quot;Angel of Light&quot; (OFFICIAL VIDEO)\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/oE3nTaafv8w?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>And speaking of that iconic band, the simple little guitar lead in \u201c<strong>Time and Doubt<\/strong>\u201d is reminiscent of those wonderful \u201870\u2019s rock years where complex wasn\u2019t always essential to great song making. The brief little guitar solo is a hint of the talent so humble.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c<strong>Strong Heart<\/strong>\u201d has the straight four \u201880\u2019s rock beat and like so many songs from that era, this one just feels so light and uplifting, so confidently positive. I would rate this one of my favorite tracks on <em>Sacrament<\/em>, for sure. The \u201cless is more\u201d guitar solo provides the perfect touch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed aligncenter is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Wytch Hazel - Strong Heart (OFFICIAL VIDEO)\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ElYW9rS5Lcw?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Not only are Hendra\u2019s chill, laid-back \u201870\u2019s vocals incredibly appealing, but the way in which he uses vocal phrasings\/crafts vocal melodies is so unique. \u201c<strong>Deliver Us<\/strong>\u201d is one of my favorite songs here for exactly those reasons \u2013 that and the catchy little lilting guitar melodies all throughout. The simple appeal in the lyrics the icing on the cake:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-medium-font-size\"><em><strong>\u201cDeliver us from the evil one\/stay with us \u2018til the fighting\u2019s done\u201d<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Musically speaking, \u201c<strong>1,000 Years<\/strong>\u201d draws one too many times from the well of success. It\u2019s not a bad song, by any means, but it feels maybe a bit redundant as I feel like at this point in the record there needs to be something to change the pace, to change the style up just a bit. In redeeming fashion, though, the guitar solo here is one of the best on the album and that \u201870\u2019s drum tom outro is mega cool!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fans of the earlier releases will sigh a breath of relief with the final 3 songs, which draw upon Wytch Hazel\u2019s folk\/classical heritage. \u201c<strong>Endless Battle<\/strong>\u201d features a great guitar lead and some of the drumming styles present on the first 3 releases. The song still doesn\u2019t have much pace, but it perfectly sets up the next song which is a total folk ballad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c<strong>Future is Gold<\/strong>\u201d is a breathtaking song of hope, the mandolin carrying the main melody throughout.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-medium-font-size\"><em><strong>\u201cWithout all the answers, without all the hope\/I will cling to freedom, I am not alone\u201d<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c<strong>Digging Deeper<\/strong>\u201d is the third part of the trifecta of songs which close out <em>Sacrament<\/em>. Once again, the instrumentation and style leans towards the band\u2019s origin sound, this the longest song on the release.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Media<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>I listened to this recording on both CD and vinyl many times before digital-penning this review. Praise and wonder \u2013 the genius simplicity of structure \u2013 are the words which most come to mind. The melodies here are exceptional. The lyrics are both challenging and inspiring \u2013 the truths simple and sincere. And while it appears upon initial listens that the words this time are more important than the music, these songs are deceptively great! Either way, you can\u2019t lose if you are a lover of original, heartfelt rock with a clear nod to the \u201870\u2019s recording sounds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The CD comes in a triple panel digi with lyrics\/credits printed on the panels and hence no insert and the vinyl I have is 180 gram clear transparent 33 RPM in single sleeve jacket with lined inner sleeve, single 2-sided lyric sheet and download card. The vinyl version does have the warmer sound, and given the &#8217;70&#8217;s bent of Wytch Hazel it represents the perfect media with which to convey the music and message of <em>Sacrament<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">CD<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>1.
