{"id":10681,"date":"2023-12-28T23:20:58","date_gmt":"2023-12-29T04:20:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/heavensmetalmagazine.com\/?p=10681"},"modified":"2023-12-30T22:59:13","modified_gmt":"2023-12-31T03:59:13","slug":"exodus-a-d-anthology","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/heavensmetalmagazine.com\/index.php\/2023\/12\/28\/exodus-a-d-anthology\/","title":{"rendered":"EXODUS A.D.: Anthology"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Exodus<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Unbeknownst to many, before Haven, Kevin Ayers was in Exodus \u2013 a band full of talented teenage rockers intent on bringing the message of the Gospel into the world of rock \u2018n\u2019 roll. <em>Anthology<\/em> represents the full collection of songs from the pre-Haven era of his musical career.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, unlike many retro-issues which are often filled with poor-sounding \u201cdemo\u201d or early \u201clive\u201d recordings, <em>Anthology<\/em> presents 26 of the songs created by Exodus \u2013 circulated in live settings back in the day &#8211; recorded by the original members between 2002 and 2010.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Exodus A.D.<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Resultingly, these \u201creunion sessions,\u201d while the music may reflect the era of its creation (1976-1978\/Volume 1 and 1978-1982\/Volume 2), the sound quality is clean, clear and balanced. Furthermore, don\u2019t expect to hear Ayers on vocals \u2013 he was the drummer. Instead, John Tidwell (bass, acoustic guitars, keys) covers the singers with the other 3 guys contributing on BGV\u2019s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Unexpectedly, the style and sound \u2013 at least as represented on <em>Anthology<\/em> \u2013 is quite diverse for a late \u201870\u2019s\/early \u201880\u2019s Christian act. Exodus covered all the influences (Kiss, Led Zep, Nugent, Thin Lizzy, Nazareth, Sabbath and even a bit of Deep Purple) very well, especially for a bunch of kids! In fact, in addition to the obvious passion for the message, there is quite a display of musical prowess on display here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Not surprisingly, given what we&#8217;ve come to appreciate from Roxx Records, each CD (Volume) comes with a 12-page lyric booklet with quality artwork (above). Both booklets contain their respective songs\u2019 lyrics, but they share the same credits\/commentary about Exodus and the creation of <em>Anthology<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Volume 1<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Right out of the gate, \u201c<strong>Alright<\/strong>\u201d represents something of a time warp with the hi-hat bustle and the ripping \u201870\u2019s bass groove. The drum fills and keyboards \u201cdate\u201d the sound but they are perfectly reproduced and executed bringing to mind and ear those glorious days of the rock \u2018n\u2019 roll explosion. The song also clearly delineates the band\u2019s passion:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-medium-font-size\"><em><strong>\u201cI pray that you\u2019ll be touched today\/I pray that you will see the way\u201d<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Additionally, \u201c<strong>Blood of the Lamb<\/strong>\u201d solidifies the message with the straight 4 groove. Once again these nifty drum fills and \u201csinging\u201d guitar solos populate the musical spaces with incredible precision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-medium-font-size\"><em><strong>\u201cHe conquered the grave\/and the price was paid\/The decision was made\/so that we could be saved\u201d<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>In contrast, think Deep Purple\u2019s \u201cHighway Star\u201d on the up-tempo \u201c<strong>Dead or Alive<\/strong>.\u201d This song jams with conviction and plenty of guitar shred magically juxtaposed with acoustic guitar interludes. Definitely one of the best songs on <em>Anthology \u2013 Volume 1<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Stepping it back in time further, the trippy number \u201c<strong>My Friend is Jesus<\/strong>\u201d trims back the groove in exchange for a dreamy appeal to receive the Lord\u2019s gift of salvation. This gem is followed by the buzzing rocker \u201c<strong>Heroes<\/strong>\u201d which calls for us to, \u201cPut aside your heroes, put away your toys\u2026\u201d This song features sweet guitar leads, solos and a wonderfully catchy groove.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed aligncenter is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"EXODUS A.D. - ALRIGHT\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/mjsmw5QZ9XQ?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c<strong>You\u2019ve Been Loving Me<\/strong>\u201d is another bass groove heavy \u201ctrip\u201d of reassurance about our hope in Christ. Tidwell\u2019s gritty vocals \u201csell\u201d the message with passion and persuasion. This is followed by the more proggy-sounding \u201c<strong>Your Life<\/strong>,\u201d which effortlessly shifts back and forth between fast\/slow tempos and intensity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fascinatingly, if Exodus were to forecast the musical and lyrical direction of Bride, I would pick \u201c<strong>Weeds<\/strong>\u201d as the prognosticator. This song screams Dale and Troy Thompson \u2013 the scathing rant against drugs and alcohol vs. the rewards in Christ.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-medium-font-size\"><em><strong>\u201cThe weeds make you high but\/then you come down\/But when Jesus fills me\/I never touch ground\u201d<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>To the credit of the original members, the quality of songwriting on <em>Anthology<\/em> is excellent. \u201c<strong>I Need You<\/strong>\u201d features a perfect balance of acoustic appeal, melodic sing-ability and rock groove. It\u2019s half Beatles and half ELP. I just love the shifting tempos and dynamic contrast. Tidwell even delivers a falsetto voice to the \u201cfade-out.\u201d Very creative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thankfully, like early Jerusalem, there is both endearing simplicity and competent execution which grants the music so much credibility. \u201c<strong>Jesus Christ Paid the Price<\/strong>\u201d exemplifies these qualities. A simple praise rock number, this one doesn\u2019t sound \u201cchurchy,\u201d but it drives home the message with quality and conviction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Like Black Sabbath? \u201c<strong>Searching<\/strong>\u201d is guilty of emulation, for sure \u2026 but in the very best way. Exodus makes this their own with those sweet guitar solos and the words\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-medium-font-size\"><em><strong>\u201cYou\u2019re gonna slip away\/Going your own way\/Unless you follow today \u2026 Yeah, guitar!\u201d<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Dramatically, Exodus save two of the best tracks on the CD for last. \u201c<strong>Sweet Sorrow Song<\/strong>\u201d is the acoustic guitar driven ballad. Again, this one could be assigned to the \u201cpraise\u201d category by musical style, but the narrative flow of the song is balladic, and the way the song builds in intensity throughout is well-executed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c<strong>Haunting Refrain<\/strong>\u201d represents the epic prog song here, if a song which falls just short of 6 minutes qualifies for that genre slot. The rousing tempo and guitar singing feels like a \u201creprise\u201d of sorts to the entire <em>Anthology Volume 1<\/em>, but this song features many dynamic shifts as it chronicles the effort and faith required to escape darkness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-medium-font-size\"><em><strong>\u201cDon\u2019t let evil fill your emptiness\u201d<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/roxxrecords.com\/collections\/roxx-records\/products\/anthology-volume-i-cd-2023-previously-unreleased-ffo-haven-stryper-petra\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Volume 1<\/a> (48:15)<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>1. Haunting Refrain (5:55)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Volume 2<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Immediately apparent on \u201c<strong>Make it Right<\/strong>\u201d is the more commercial approach to songwriting, the chorus in this song so perfectly infectious as it parodies the struggle to \u201cfill the void\u201d with our constant obsessions of noise, TV and music.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-medium-font-size\"><em><strong>\u201cI need the radio\/I need to have my stereo\/I leave the TV on at night\/I need to fill my mind\u2026\u201d<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Oh, but it\u2019s so good! As Exodus acknowledges in glorious fashion with \u201c<strong>Rock n Roll (Is my Kind of Music)<\/strong>.\u201d This rock anthem exudes confidence with hard rock, melodic and dare I say \u201cradio-friendly\u201d glory. The cleverly titled song simultaneously serves as both a tribute to the beloved genre and our \u201cidol-like\u201d love for the tunes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c<strong>Now I Can See<\/strong>,\u201d with its almost The Who like drum and rhythm bent, is the most punk-ish track on here. The guitar solo shreds and the message of freedom in Christ is perfectly channeled through the energy and \u201cjoy\u201d weaved within the fabric of the music.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Diversely, Lynyrd Skynyrd swing rock dominates the short, but sweet \u201c<strong>Satisfied<\/strong>,\u201d while Exodus once again infuses Bride with more inspiration on the funk\/groove monster \u201c<strong>Sin Dirt<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-medium-font-size\"><em><strong>\u201cWon\u2019t you clean me Lord\/wash away my sins\/Give me a chance\/to start over again\u201d<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c<strong>The Galleon<\/strong>\u201d is an old-timey simple groove with a \u201cfishers-of-men\u201d lyrical swagger, followed by the gritty \u201c<strong>Devil\u2019s a Liar<\/strong>,\u201d \u2013 a preacher\u2019s appeal to resist the lies \u2013 which features a killer guitar solo shred. Once again notable the bass guitar riff.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Undeniably, fans of Led Zep will immediately identify with the acoustic guitar lead, melodies and vocal phrasings woven within the fabric of \u201c<strong>On Eagles Wings<\/strong>\u201d \u2013 a ballad of humbling confession and a \u201cjourney\u201d of reconciliation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Furthermore, the prog rock \u201c<strong>Follow the Star<\/strong>\u201d is channeling Rush with the cool keyboards and effects during the long intro, but then launches into a more melodic rock vein during the verses. Yet restless and not content to keep it simple, three excellent guitar solos, accompanied by frenzied drum fills, disrupt the norm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed aligncenter is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"EXODUS A.D. - MAKE IT RIGHT\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/MbJKaqeB8H8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Interestingly, even the songs on <em>Anthology Volume 2<\/em> which were written during the later period of Exodus history seem deeply rooted in late \u201860\u2019s and \u201870\u2019s rock. I don\u2019t really hear any \u201880\u2019s influences on most of these tracks. \u201c<strong>I Believe in You<\/strong>\u201d is pure ballad, a love song to Jesus, a simple statement of faith and thankfulness. The song is builds in symphonic fashion throughout and represents the longest song in duration in the 26-song canon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Surprisingly, the John Cougar Mellencamp vibe on \u201c<strong>Round and Round<\/strong>\u201d imparts an upbeat and cheerful musical vibe in paradoxical juxtaposition to the \u201cend times\u201d gloom and chaos depicted within the lyrics. I like how the song almost finishes and then builds back up with the final \u201870\u2019s prog-rock reprise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Anthology Volume 2<\/em> also closes out with two excellent numbers. To the credit of Exodus, they apparently didn\u2019t write too many songs about failed relationships! But \u201c<strong>Please Believe Me<\/strong>\u201d represents a very credible and well-written apology to a lover, an appeal \u2013 replete with singing guitars \u2013 for forgiveness and \u201cone more chance.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Finally, it all circles \u201c<strong>Back to You<\/strong>\u201d with the heartfelt and repentant closer \u2013 a ballad which features the vocals and acoustic guitar with interspersed strings. Musically the song exhibits a nice ebb and flow of gentle and intense expression, the perfect support for the words.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-medium-font-size\"><em><strong>\u201cWon\u2019t You forgive me Lord\/For turning my back on You\/Won\u2019t you forgive me Lord\/I want to come back to You, Back to You\u201d<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/roxxrecords.com\/collections\/roxx-records\/products\/exodus-a-d-anthology-volume-i-cd-2023-previously-unreleased-ffo-haven-stryper-petra\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Volume 2<\/a> (58:15)<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>1. Both Volumes are worthy of fans of Kevin Ayers and vintage \u201870\u2019s evangelistic and uplifting rock, but with a clean, well-balanced mix. My only criticism would be in the drums department where the sounds are too controlled, compressed and stifled. (Possibly e-drums used?) This kind of \u201870\u2019s rock style deserves the full-on, wildly uncontrollable resonance and sibilance of acoustic shells and cymbals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In thanks, credit Bill Bafford for once again digging deep into the archives of the Christian rock world to bring these deserving-to-be-heard songs from Exodus to the light of day. And thanks to the guys in Exodus for their many-years commitment to the recreation of their own musical history with these quality recordings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:100px\"
