Fast is no joke, either \u2026 not only in reappearance but as in speedy thrashy progressive metal. There is no doubt that 2022\u2019s debut <a href=\"https:\/\/heavensmetalmagazine.com\/index.php\/2022\/01\/24\/flood-polarized\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Polarized<\/em> <\/a>was a statement release \u2013 the \u201cother\u201d guys in Tourniquet weren\u2019t finished. And as great as those songs are, I felt they had a distinctive and familiar Tourniquet aural bouquet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, the musical muscle and creativity showcased on <em>Polarized<\/em> was enough to convince most listeners and fans that Flood had much more up their sleeve \u2013 the hope that a second release would more clearly demarcate the surgical margins of the Flood operation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hence, the team of Gary Lenaire (guitars\/vocals), Guy Ritter (vocals), David Husvik (drums), Anna Sentina (bass) and newbie Joao Miguel (guitars) return to the musical operating theater with the riveting and dynamic <em>Ripped Into Exile<\/em> \u2013 the very title evoking visceral ruminations of trial and pain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Ripped Into Loudness<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Paradoxically, the deceptively \u201cbeautiful\u201d cover art stands in stark contrast to the steely and aggressive nature of both the lyrics and the music. The 8-panel gatefold digipak CD is wonderfully designed and laid out \u2013 the lyrics and credits very easy to read. Where <em>Polarized<\/em> was packaged \u201call black,\u201d this one moves to the opposite end of the spectrum in glistening white. I suspect this is probably not incidental.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While <em>Ripped Into Exile<\/em> is produced by Ritter and Lenaire, the mastering of Bill Metoyer may cause fans to rejoice or lament. Clean precise placement of all the voices here is a positive \u2013 no muddiness in this mix \u2013 but darn if the bass end is lacking a bit and the sound field is compressed, devoid of dynamic range. I hate to ever use the term \u201cbrick-walled\u201d in this setting \u2013 especially for musicians and music engineers this talented \u2013 but this might be the only negative for fans to endure on this otherwise exceptionally executed collection of songs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cosmetics and sonic aesthetics aside, Flood has much to showcase from an original art and musical perspective during the 47 -minute procedure labeled <em>Ripped Into Exile<\/em>. Fans of metal will rejoice \u2013 its heavy (mostly), its technical (mostly), its creatively melodic (mostly), its harsh (at times) and most importantly \u2026 its metal!!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed aligncenter is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Ripped Into Exile\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/pX9fDETBRpI?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Operative Summary<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>title track<\/strong> comes blasting out of the gates with speed and incisive commentary not only on the disease of \u201coriginal sin\u201d but also with the daily struggle we have in the world today staying spiritually focused and healthy. The drum bass of Husvik is so fast here, it sounds like a machine-gun \u201cgoing cyclic.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For those addicted to medical allegorical metaphoricalisms, \u201c<strong>Autopsied Atheism<\/strong>\u201d is a song which simply shreds from start to finish \u2013 the surgical detritus left for minds to process and dissect as the divine coroner catalogs\/records the cause of death. The guitars here simply crush \u2013 both in rhythm and lead solo wizardry \u2013 as the heaviness of the metal blade reveals the post-mortem state of the \u201cvictim.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-medium-font-size\"><em><strong>\u201cAutopsy done\/Judged by the Son\/Dead atheism thrown into the morgue\/The cause of death, the very cause of death\/the cause of death was the presence of the Lord\u201d<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>In humble contrast, Guy Ritter\u2019s \u201c<strong>Burial<\/strong>\u201d opines the questions of a humble man facing the darkness and \u201cborrowed time\u201d of the world in which we live,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-medium-font-size\"><em><strong>\u201cI don\u2019t know where to go\/Is this a burial?\/Or do I need to trust God\u2019s in control?\u201d<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c<strong>Dreamt<\/strong>\u201d slows things down for the exile from the Nile and the thread of the Word through time as Christ became \u201cthe very first born to rise.\u201d Ritter\u2019s voice attains the quality of old here and the vocal effects, while purposefully distorted in places, remain captivating and resonate with the doomy \u201cOfficium Defunctorum\u201d of <em>Psycho Surgery<\/em> days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The killer guitar riff in \u201c<strong>Darwin\u2019s Missing Chimp<\/strong>\u201d might get buried in the forest of speed and drumming insanity which infuses this shred-fest of a song. However, despite the fierce frenzy of instruments, this one offers up a smile and one of the most infectious choruses on the release.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-medium-font-size\"><strong>\u201cThere\u2019s no monkeys in the tree\/There\u2019s no monkeys in the tree\/In the family tree\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Interestingly, Husvik channels Neil Peart with the percussion extras while Sentina\u2019s bass guitar takes a step into the limelight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c<strong>Others<\/strong>\u201d could easily vie for one of my favorite songs from <em>Ripped Into Exile<\/em> with its guitar plucking intro reminiscent of Van Halen\u2019s \u201cAin\u2019t Talkin\u2019 &#8216;Bout Love.\u201d Seriously, this song rules, the lyrics the greatest exhortation of all time. But while this may seem like a \u201cballad\u201d track, the drumming is speedy and the guitar solos are fast and furiously executed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Observationally, <em>Ripped Into Exile<\/em>, in a way, plays out like a Megadeth album. There are these thrash shredders and then the middle tempo songs and then the more expressive melodic\/balladic songs. Guy Ritter\u2019s \u201c<strong>Can\u2019t Undo<\/strong>\u201d falls into this latter category. The song deceptively starts out like a slow burner, but then it picks up aggression, fades to acoustic and then with drum improv by Husvik shifts seamlessly back into intensity only to fade out with grace. Beautifully crafted and executed track.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Think Tourniquet with \u201c<strong>Punk This<\/strong>.\u201d This song feels like it could have been recorded during the <em>Psycho Surgery<\/em> sessions. Unfettered by label \u201cadvice and constraint\u201d Flood are free to really let loose with these brilliant guitar solos. However, despite the praise, I don\u2019t like the \u201ctinny\u201d cymbal sound and overly compressed drum bass. Ah, just let the music breathe\u2026 and let the drums sound more acoustic and less constrained\/processed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Eight songs deep and still waiting for the epic track? Me too. The Eastern influenced \u201c<strong>In An Ancient Time<\/strong>\u201d (6:29 duration) turns out to be the longest track on the album. The mini-epic does have some of that Iron Maiden vibe going on, and it does offer us a more \u201cnon-Tourniquet\u201d style from Flood. However, I would have liked to hear this one fleshed out a bit with more experimentation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lenaire\u2019s patented vocals infuse the closer, \u201c<strong>Zero Hour<\/strong>.\u201d This is a really good song as it, once again, doesn\u2019t sound like either Echo Hollow or Tourniquet. My hope for Flood is that they pave a progressive path to new music, and this song goes far to showcase that tremendous potential while keeping the message of \u201chope in Christ\u201d close to the vest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-medium-font-size\"><strong><em>\u201cThe Word is on your mind, written long before your time\/Take the water take His side, gain your life and lose your pride\/To gain your life you first must die, your flesh is weak\/So don\u2019t even try to please Him on your own no way\/To Christ alone, Obey<\/em>\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Ultima Examen<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Ripped Into Exile<\/em> represents the culmination of the musical operative expertise of Flood, a plexus of musicians consisting of the metal amalgamation of Tourniquet, Extol and Echo Hollow. While audio technical limitations may lessen the impact of the aural experience for audiophilic listeners, the creative and technical execution of the individual participants far exceed these electronic constraints.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is the opinion of this examiner that Flood has delivered an engaging, technically brilliant and spiritually insightful collection of songs which will most likely be praised and immortalized in the annals of heavy metal circa 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>23:51, 4 April 2024<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jonathan &#8220;Doc&#8221; Swank, M.
