{"id":11184,"date":"2024-04-06T22:17:40","date_gmt":"2024-04-07T02:17:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/heavensmetalmagazine.com\/?p=11184"},"modified":"2024-04-06T22:17:41","modified_gmt":"2024-04-07T02:17:41","slug":"leah-the-glory-and-the-fallen","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/heavensmetalmagazine.com\/index.php\/2024\/04\/06\/leah-the-glory-and-the-fallen\/","title":{"rendered":"LEAH: The Glory and the Fallen"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Leah VI<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Leah (McHenry) is a solo artist\/vocalist (Canada) \u2013 in the vein of Loreena Mckennitt\/Enya meets symphonic rock\/metal \u2013 with international multi-instrumentalist collaborations and five previous releases \u2013 <em>Of Earth &amp; Angels<\/em> (2012), <em>Otherworld<\/em> (2013) and <em>Kings &amp; Queens<\/em> (2015) and <em><a href=\"https:\/\/heavensmetalmagazine.com\/index.php\/2018\/10\/08\/leah-the-quest\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Quest<\/a><\/em> (2018). She also released the EP <em><a href=\"https:\/\/heavensmetalmagazine.com\/index.php\/2019\/12\/11\/leah-ancient-winter\/\">Ancient Winter<\/a><\/em> (folk\/Celtic carols\/hymns) in 2019, which is the last time we\u2019ve heard from her and her friends. (The latter two releases have previously been reviewed on these pages with links provided above.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For those familiar with Leah\u2019s music, <em>The Glory and the Fallen<\/em> is no less captivating than its predecessors. For those who have not heard any of her works consider this album the perfect place to discover a new friend. The stunning instrumentations, swirling compositions and beautiful, uplifting and mesmerizing melodies are carefully constructed and perfectly mixed. Add to this Leah\u2019s ethereal voice and cinematic symphonic rock, with world\/Celtic\/folk infused into its DNA, doesn\u2019t get any better.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Players<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Furthermore, the hallmark of a great musician is that they continue to expand and improve their song writing, dynamics and diversity with each release. And this may just be the best mixed\/best sounding we\u2019ve yet to hear from Leah and her compositional partner Oliver Philipps who is credited with vocal arrangements\/orchestrations\/production.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to Philipps, two long-time friends have once again teamed up with Leah, both musicians with her since 2015\u2019s epic <em>Kings &amp; Queens<\/em>. Timo Somers handles all the guitars and bass on the songs and Sander Zoer the drums. Timo also guest vocals on \u201cVictory\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Other contributors: Pipes and flutes by David Celibeerian, guest harsh vocals by Mark Jansen (Epica) on \u201cUnshakable\u201d and \u201cSleeping Giant,\u201d and Leah\u2019s 3 daughters provide vocals on \u201cUnshakable.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Media<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><em>The Glory and the Fallen<\/em> has been released in several different formats: CD jewel case\/16-page booklet (featuring the main release), 3 CD Deluxe Digipak\/16-page booklet (Main Release, Instrumentals, Ambient Release), digital downloads of the previous and then the 2LP gatefold vinyl in either black or crimson. The artwork (Giannis Nakos) on all the physical media is stunning, with the vinyl gatefold showcasing it the best. [This review will be of the 3 CD digipak and the 3 LP vinyl sets.]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Available <a href=\"http:\/\/theleahshop.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">HERE<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><em>The Glory and the Fallen<\/em><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The lead-off \u201c<strong>Archangel<\/strong>\u201d is simultaneously a fantastic representation of everything at which Leah excels and a superb depiction of spiritual warfare\/battle in the heavenly realms. Where\u2019s the video? Seriously, this balanced track has heavy guitar crunch, double bass drum yet tons of melody, dynamics and majestic, cinematic appeal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed aligncenter is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"LEAH - Archangel (Official Lyric Video)\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/MoLqQrc1vjo?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019ve probably listened to this album nearly 20 times in the past month at different times of day and in different moods. I find this helpful in better dissecting out the true quality of the music from the \u201cear candy\u201d initial appeal when we listen to something \u201cnew\u201d by one of our favorite (or any, for that matter) artists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Consequently, \u201c<strong>No More Fear<\/strong>\u201d is a song I just keep coming back to over and over again \u2013 its smooth flow and catchy melodies combine perfectly with the confident lyrical outpouring of strength, commitment and faith to living a life in ultimate freedom. Heartfelt and timeless. And Zoer\u2019s syncopated drum rhythm pushes the song a notch to the progressive side.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-medium-font-size\"><strong><em>\u201cWe will build houses\/We will build kingdoms\/Where the wine overflows for eternity\/We will tend our gardens\/We will raise our children\/Where the laughter betrays every tyranny.<\/em>\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Impressively, right on the heels of that gem is \u201c<strong>Unshakable,<\/strong>\u201d yet another song of strength of character and faith. Musically this song features what sounds like dulcimer, Celtic pipes, strong guitar leads, and some nifty double bass drum rhythms &#8211; a union of the old and new worlds both instrumentally and conceptually. Leah\u2019s 3 daughters contribute vocally which makes this track magical and personal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-medium-font-size\"><em><strong>\u201cThere is no light you can take\/Our faith is unshakable\/There is a fight you can\u2019t win\/Our fate is unbreakable\/A brighter future awaits us.\u201d<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Equally impressive, \u201c<strong>Speak to Me<\/strong>\u201d is another song with a Celtic\/folk lilt, this one more balladic, with a humble, simple plea for intervention and direction. Leah is gifted in writing a song which deeply moves the soul, but which simultaneously represents a simple truth \u2013 or in this case a plea. Credit Oliver Philipps with collaboration, the instrumentation is sublime here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Transitioning to fantasy taletelling \u2026 \u201c<strong>Dream Voyage<\/strong>\u201d would make Nightwish proud. Cinematic. Symphonic. Heavy. Melodic. Wow, this song has it all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Monumentally impactful, \u201c<strong>Revive<\/strong>\u201d is an epic song for our times, for sure. I don\u2019t know which male vocalist accompanies Leah on this track (my guess would be Philipps), but the synergy is infectiously palpable. Somers gets some shred time during the guitar solo, as does his compatriot (Delian) on drums.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-medium-font-size\"><em><strong>\u201cWill we revive a paradise\/Bring back death to life\/Revive a paradise, oh.\u201d<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Fans of Sharon den Adel and Within Temptation will totally embrace the ethereal \u201c<strong>Little Stars<\/strong>.\u201d This less complex, more stripped-down rock ballad is once again demonstrating Leah\u2019s penchant for simple melody matched with dream-like vocals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Subsequently, \u201c<strong>Wings of Time<\/strong>\u201d is a ballad as well, more of a power ballad as it ebbs and flows in intensity and pulse throughout, and Somers\u2019 guitar solo helps as well to cement the \u201cpower\u201d into the ballad. Love the ominous effects in the outro.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed aligncenter is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"LEAH - The Glory and the Fallen: Teaser Video #3\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ph-KP9jl6bs?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p> In contrast, fans of symphonic power metal will rejoice with \u201c<strong>Sleeping Giant<\/strong>,\u201d which is the heaviest metal track on the album. Some of the heaviness is clearly infused by Mark Jansen\u2019s (Epica) harsh vocals \u2013 the \u201cbeauty and the beast\u201d effect ala Nightwish in full force here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-medium-font-size\"><strong>\u201cBreak free\/Find\/Your lost peace of mind\/When life fades to grey\/Let the music ring\/Don\u2019t dismay\/Hear the angels sing\/Today.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The frenetic drumming juxtaposed with Celtic pluckings is nothing short of spectacular as the message of freedom is driven home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-medium-font-size\"><em><strong>\u201cFreedom comes when you learn to let go\/A leap of faith transcends all you are know\/Believing will reveal the state of your soul\/A sleeping giant awakens.\u201d<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>However, despite this \u201cleap of faith\u201d there is more \u2026 \u201c<strong>Before This War is Over<\/strong>.\u201d One of the more straight-up rocker tunes here, this one exhorts us to stand united. Once again the song shifts seamlessly from a more commercial beat\/vibe to heavy aggression. Lyrically, the song points out a truth our country (along with many other nations) is fast neglecting with grave consequences for those who desire freedom\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-medium-font-size\"><em><strong>\u201cSome wounds, time won\u2019t heal\/And now it\u2019s time to fight once more\/They said, \u201cnever again\u201d\/All lies (And don\u2019t forget it)\/They\u2019ll slay forever\/Don\u2019t reward a crime (Don\u2019t take the bribe).\u201d<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Truth spoken. Never should we just \u201cgive up\u201d and forsake our world to lawlessness and chaos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ah, but there is \u201c<strong>Victory<\/strong>\u201d \u2026 yet another powerful and inspiring song (can you sense a theme here?). There are a few vocal effects on this one to change things up, but the overwhelming cry and plea on this record is summed up here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><em><strong>\u201cRise up!\/And take the victory for yourself\/Angels guide you\/Allies gather against the gates of Hell\/All of heaven fights with you\/All of heaven fights with you\u2026\u201d<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Now that\u2019s metal!!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Delightfully, the main release closes out with yet another more commercial track, \u201c<strong>Glow,\u201d <\/strong>a call to embrace your destiny \u2013 the afterglow of an amazing album!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"515\" src=\"https:\/\/heavensmetalmagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Leah-The-Glory-and-the-Fallen-jacket-front-back-1024x515.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-11190\" srcset=\"https:\/\/heavensmetalmagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Leah-The-Glory-and-the-Fallen-jacket-front-back-1024x515.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/heavensmetalmagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Leah-The-Glory-and-the-Fallen-jacket-front-back-300x151.jpg 300w, https:\/\/heavensmetalmagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Leah-The-Glory-and-the-Fallen-jacket-front-back-150x75.jpg 150w, https:\/\/heavensmetalmagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Leah-The-Glory-and-the-Fallen-jacket-front-back-768x386.jpg 768w, https:\/\/heavensmetalmagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Leah-The-Glory-and-the-Fallen-jacket-front-back.jpg 1419w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Ambient Leah<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Eight of the main release songs have been reworked as \u201cambient\u201d mixes and released on the deluxe CD\/download\/LP versions. Basically, the electric guitars and drums have been removed from the mix with dependence on the orchestrations\/keys\/programming \u2026 and of course the voices. While song structures don\u2019t diverge from the main release versions, there are some variations with shorter duration of some of the ambient tracks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Essentially, these versions showcase the vocals and the melodies \u2013 every one of these songs memorable in that regard. Where \u201cUnshakable\u201d and \u201cLittle Stars\u201d are more balladic in original form these ambient versions feel less distinct, but on some of the heavier tracks like \u201cWings of Time,\u201d \u201cRevive\u201d and especially \u201cSleeping Giant\u201d (sans harsh vocals) the ambient versions contrast quite a bit offering nice alternative versions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"754\" src=\"https:\/\/heavensmetalmagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Leah-The-Glory-and-the-Fallen-vinyl-1024x754.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-11188\" style=\"width:840px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/heavensmetalmagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Leah-The-Glory-and-the-Fallen-vinyl-1024x754.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/heavensmetalmagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Leah-The-Glory-and-the-Fallen-vinyl-300x221.jpg 300w, https:\/\/heavensmetalmagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Leah-The-Glory-and-the-Fallen-vinyl-150x110.jpg 150w, https:\/\/heavensmetalmagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Leah-The-Glory-and-the-Fallen-vinyl-768x566.jpg 768w, https:\/\/heavensmetalmagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Leah-The-Glory-and-the-Fallen-vinyl-1536x1131.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/heavensmetalmagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Leah-The-Glory-and-the-Fallen-vinyl.jpg 1761w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Vinyl Glory<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The gatefold and 2 LPs manifest a beautiful set and perfectly complement the graceful, yet powerful nature of the music. My copies are flawless. The lower master volume is much appreciated, and the dynamic range is noticeable. These discs sound great at low and high volume with little to no listener fatigue. Also noteworthy is that the bass doesn\u2019t overpower as can be the case with some of the more contemporary vinyl renderings I\u2019ve experienced where there is too much bass dominating the audio field.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yes, the ambient tracks made the cut. Leah has clearly improved as a songwriter and singer. She has put herself in the company of fellow musicians who not only share her passion for her art but also stand at the top of their game.
