{"id":11848,"date":"2024-07-28T21:28:23","date_gmt":"2024-07-29T01:28:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/heavensmetalmagazine.com\/?p=11848"},"modified":"2024-07-28T22:14:45","modified_gmt":"2024-07-29T02:14:45","slug":"anette-olzon-rapture","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/heavensmetalmagazine.com\/index.php\/2024\/07\/28\/anette-olzon-rapture\/","title":{"rendered":"ANETTE OLZON: Rapture"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><em>Rapture<\/em><\/strong><strong> is Pure Rapture<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Fans of power\/symphonic metal fronted by female vocalists are likely familiar with Nightwish as well as the infamous departure of the band\u2019s original vocalist Tarja Turunen after the <em>Once <\/em>album (2004). Likewise, some may also be familiar with her replacement Anette Olzon who sang lead vocals with Nightwish for <em>Dark Passion Play<\/em> (2007) and <em>Imaginaerum <\/em>(2011). Those albums, along with the companion <em>Imaginaerum<\/em> movie, were where I first became acquainted with Olzon\u2019s vocals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Yksin Olzon<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>However, many may not be as familiar with her work as a solo artist after her painful separation\/departure from Nightwish. Prior to <em>Rapture<\/em> she released two solo recordings (discussed below) and a pair of collaborative records with Russell Allen (Symphony X) under the moniker of Allen\/Olzon. Just the endorsement of a vocalist like Allen went a long way to bringing Olzon back into the metal fold \u2026 ah, but I\u2019m getting ahead of myself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Survival<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Shine<\/em> (2014) on Ear Music was her first effort as she began to move on from the metal world of Nightwish and the pressures she had sustained during her tenure there. Not surprisingly, the music wasn\u2019t metal but more pop\/melodic rock \u2013 music which showcased a different side of Olzon\u2019s persona. Likewise, lyrically and thematically <em>Shine<\/em> felt like a statement of survival.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Strength<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Subsequently, there was a long hiatus until the release of <em>Strong<\/em> (2021). Not only was Olzon now signed to Frontiers Records, but she had also connected with Magnus Karlsson of Primal Fear\/Heart Healer (producer\/guitars\/keys) through their work together on the first Allen\/Olzon <em>Worlds Apart<\/em> release (2020). The addition of two other musicians, Anders K\u00f6llerfors (drums), who now plays for Narnia and All For The King, along with Johan Husgafvel (bass\/growls), would round out the line-up for Olzon\u2019s second solo release. Incidentally, Husgafvel (Pain) just happens to be Anette\u2019s husband!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Consequently, <em>Strong<\/em> represented, musically, a move back toward the heavier rock and metal world. Where <em>Shine<\/em> was thematically about survival, <em>Strong<\/em> was exactly what it sounded like \u2013 a statement of strength. With the help of Karlsson, <em>Strong<\/em> was more professionally presented and well-written, more polished in mixing and sound quality, and much more metal (with Husgafvel\u2019s growls mixed into the amalgam).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Faith<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Fast forward to present and we are introduced to <em>Rapture,<\/em> a collection of songs which takes the quality and intensity to a whole higher level. This should be what we expect given that not only is this Olzon\u2019s second release with this group of musicians, but it just felt like she had more work to do, more to say after the previous release. Where <em>Strong<\/em> was an 8\/10, <em>Rapture<\/em> is a 9.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Furthermore, not only is the music faster and more aggressive \u2013 this is symphonic\/power metal at its core \u2013 the lyrical approach is just as radical, very much influenced by Olzon\u2019s Christian faith. In many ways, <em>Rapture<\/em> feels like Olzon proving to the metal world that she is capable, she is metal \u2026 this is power metal on her terms, under her condition and with her message. Amen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Unity Over Division<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Additionally, no fan of Christian metal should find anything in the lyrics off-putting. Regardless of differing views on \u201cThe Rapture\u201d (as Biblically depicted) the emphasis of Olzon\u2019s lyrics is on standing strong in faith. Not insignificantly, there are a ton of lyrics here, and most of them are exhorting and unifying in nature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Anette Olzon - &quot;Heed The Call&quot; - Official Lyric Video\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/MG0GK1OmGX4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Songs<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Honestly, I will confess that I like Nightwish\u2019s <em>Dark Passion Play<\/em> and <em>Imaginaerum<\/em>. I realized, at the time of their release, fans of Nightwish who liked the vocals of Anette Olzon were criticized as not being \u201ctrue\u201d \u2013 their loss. I rated both albums equally excellent. <em>Rapture<\/em>, while minus the notoriety of those Nightwish releases, is every bit as excellent, the only fault here (just putting this out there) is the similarity of song composition and pace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Incidentally, while most of the exegesis has focused on Olzon to this point, it would be an understatement to say the band members and artists involved in this project play supporting roles. These musicians seriously shred. The guitar riffs, and the solos, are primo. Drums, bass, BGV\u2019s \u2026 it all sounds amazing. Not to mention the mixing and mastering of Jacob Hansen. World class!!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c<strong>Heed the Call<\/strong>\u201d comes roaring out of the speakers with conviction and power. Olzon, given her more pop rock vocal background, should not be compared to her predecessor at Nightwish (Tarja) or even Simone Simmons (Epica) who both have more operatic soprano styles. Instead, Sharon den Adel (Within Temptation), or more accurately Charlotte Wessels (ex-Delain) are truer reference points, particularly the latter. While Wessels is no longer a member of Delain she shares some things in common with Olzon. They share a similar tone and range, and both have a predilection for the more accessible, pop side of rock.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is a metal anthem, a call to \u201carms,\u201d so to speak, with the pleading to, <em>\u201cHeed the call, hear the sound sent from above, world we know is doomed to fall, humans you have been warned, the heavens will sing, so bow to the King.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The \u201cchildren\u2019s choir\u201d break-out section with the Lord\u2019s Prayer is sublime, followed by Husgafvel\u2019s brutal declaration clearly sets the pace for a very special collection of songs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>title track<\/strong> features Olzon soaring over the four-on-the-floor driving beat delivering the decry of judgment and the hope of deliverance from final suffering. Her vocal command here is stunning, perfectly executed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c<strong>Day of Wrath<\/strong>\u201d opens with ethereal melodic soaring to soon been accompanied by a heavy guitar hook. Once again, this song heralds prophesied events, the double bass drum as punishing as the scathing reality of fate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-medium-font-size\"><em><strong>\u201cThe day of wrath has come who\u2019ll stand\/All will be cleansed\/Cry aloud, make us repent or all end\u201d<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Keeping the liquidity of the metal flowing, \u201c<strong>Requiem<\/strong>\u201d features lovely melody with that straight driving beat fluctuating from quarter notes to eighths to sixteenths \u2013 the song essentially a lament against sin. The Latin vocal sections keep this symphonic\/gothic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c<strong>Arise<\/strong>\u201d follows, led in by ethereal vocals over top of keys and then things kick into gear with a heavy groove, Olzon sounding a bit like Lacuna Coil\u2019s Cristina Scabbia on this song of environmental responsibility\/a call to stewardship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Subsequently, the tandem of \u201c<strong>Take a Stand<\/strong>\u201d and \u201c<strong>Call Out Evil<\/strong>\u201d are an absolute appeal to both stand firm in faith and have no fear of confronting evil for what it is. These are my favorite two tracks on <em>Rapture<\/em>, for sure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-medium-font-size\"><em><strong>\u201cWe\u2019re standing hand in hand\/With voices like thunder\/We take a stand\/We break through the night as one\u201d<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The latter track features \u201cduets\u201d in the choruses with Olzon and Husgafvel in perfect synchrony in true \u201cBeauty and the Beast\u201d form. The keyboard outro the perfect touch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c<strong>Greedy World<\/strong>\u201d is going to be the track fans of metal adore, just for its power and rhythmic crunch. Let\u2019s see how prophetic, frighteningly so, this lyric proves to be\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-medium-font-size\"><em><strong>\u201cPity you\/I walk over you\/Push you to the ground\/How can you follow me\/I\u2019m the queen of everything\/My demand by your hand\u201d<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The guitar solo here is noteworthy, as is the choral chant which accompanies the press of metal crush.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At this point in the <em>Rapture<\/em> sequence, one might wonder, \u201cWhere is the ballad?\u201d \u201c<strong>Hear My Song<\/strong>\u201d answers the call with its sweeping symphonic elements, intimate keys, melodic guitar solo, balladic drumming and the cry for victory through song and faith. Beautiful! Proof Olzon is a truly gifted singer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Interestingly, this listener would have been completely if Rapture ended on the last piano note of this song \u2026 but there are still two more tracks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In tribute and reference to the previous release, <em>Strong,<\/em> Olzon connects the dots of her music. While I prefer the previous anthemic exhortations, you can\u2019t but help embrace \u201c<strong>Head Up High<\/strong>,\u201d with that incredibly catchy Nightwish-like chant-chorus:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-medium-font-size\"><em><strong>\u201cWe\u2019ll stay strong\/We won\u2019t bend for no one\/Keep the fight\/We\u2019ll keep our heads up high\u201d<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Finally, <em>Rapture<\/em> closes out with the uplifting \u201c<strong>We Pray for Peace<\/strong>.\u201d The highlight here, in addition to the killer guitar solo, would have to be the way Olzon soars over her husband\u2019s growls in the middle section. What better way to end than an appeal to \u201cpray for peace.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed aligncenter is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Anette Olzon &quot;Hear My Song&quot; - Official Music Video\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/PG3IL3qJUsc?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Raptured<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Fortunately, we are blessed to have both <em>Rapture <\/em>and Leah\u2019s <em><a href=\"https:\/\/heavensmetalmagazine.com\/index.php\/2024\/04\/06\/leah-the-glory-and-the-fallen\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Glory and the Fallen<\/a><\/em> this year. Both are fantastic albums, Leah more folk\/symphonic\/rock oriented and more diverse in terms of musical styles and themes, while Olzon proves to be the metal maiden this time around. Top 5? Maybe \u2026 top 10? For sure. Well deserved, well earned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>1.
