Los Angeles, CA (August 13, 2024)\u2014Craft Recordings<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Violent Femmes<\/strong>\u00a0are commemorating\u00a040 years of the band\u2019s sophomore title,\u00a0Hallowed Ground<\/em>, with a wide vinyl reissue<\/strong>. Once an overlooked gem, the album has become a cornerstone of Violent Femmes\u2019 catalog and live performances, and a pioneering work in the post-punk and alt-country genres.\u00a0Set for release on November 8<\/strong>\u00a0and available for\u00a0pre-order today,<\/a>\u00a0the LP has been\u00a0mastered from the original stereo tapes (AAA)<\/strong>\u00a0and features standout tracks such as the live staple \u201cCountry Death Song<\/strong>,\u201d fan favorite \u201cNever Tell<\/strong>,\u201d the hauntingly atmospheric \u201cI Hear the Rain<\/strong>,\u201d the Lou Reed\u2013inspired \u201cSweet Misery Blues<\/strong>\u201d and the infectious \u201cJesus Walking on the Water<\/strong>.\u201d In addition to the standard vinyl, widely available for the first time in over a decade,\u00a0Hallowed Ground<\/em>\u00a0can also be found in four limited color pressings, including a Green Smoke variant (available at\u00a0vfemmes.com<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0craftrecordings.com<\/a>), Orange Smoke (independent record stores<\/a>), Azure Blue (Barnes & Noble<\/a>) and Onyx (Spotify Fans First<\/a>, available exclusively to followers). First released in May of 1984, Violent Femmes\u2019 sophomore title,\u00a0Hallowed Ground<\/em>, is celebrated for its innovative exploration of American roots music, blending traditional folk influences with the band\u2019s distinctive style. The set also includes contributions from banjo virtuoso\u00a0Tony Trischka on \u201cCountry Death Song\u201d and \u201cIt\u2019s Gonna Rain,\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0and avant-garde saxophonist\u00a0John Zorn on \u201cBlack Girls,\u201d\u00a0<\/strong>both of whom added distinctive layers to the record’s experimental soundscape.\u00a0The album\u2019s lyrics delve into themes of faith, redemption and existential contemplation. This marked a bold departure from the more straightforward pop sound of the band\u2019s debut, which featured beloved teen angst anthems like \u201cBlister in the Sun<\/strong>,\u201d \u201cAdd It Up<\/strong>\u201d and \u201cKiss Off<\/strong>.\u201d The record\u2019s unique lyrical approach and haunting melodies created a deeply introspective and immersive listening experience that intrigued\u2014and initially divided\u2014listeners, including the band members themselves.\u00a0On\u00a0Hallowed Ground<\/em>, Gano embraced his faith, something previously restrained in his songwriting at the request of atheist-leaning members\u00a0Brian Ritchie<\/strong>\u00a0(Femmes\u2019 bassist) and\u00a0Victor Delorenzo<\/strong>\u00a0(Femmes\u2019 original drummer).

Gano explained the group\u2019s hesitation in a 1989 interview with\u00a0Phoenix New Times<\/a>, saying, \u201cAt the time, Brian was very aggressively anti-anything Christian. He said he didn\u2019t want to be playing in a band that was expressing something that he felt so vehemently against. I figured they\u2019d find their expression sometime later.\u201d What made Ritchie relent, however, was the quality of Gano\u2019s songwriting. It was unimpeachable. \u201cIt\u2019s funny,\u201d Gano added in that interview, \u201cBrian now says that my Christian songs are some of my best numbers.\u201d\u00a0

In a 2012 interview with the\u00a0Houston Chronicle<\/a>, Brian Ritchie offered insight into the album\u2019s creation and its initial reception, reflecting, \u201cTo me, it\u2019s more punk to defy your audience than to play what they want to hear. But we lost our audience that way.\u201d\u00a0<\/em>Speaking to the fact that both the debut and\u00a0Hallowed Ground<\/em>\u00a0were written while Gano was still in high school, he added,\u00a0<\/em>\u201cIronically, we had the material for both albums. We could\u2019ve put out a double or released\u00a0Hallowed Ground<\/em>\u00a0first and then the debut. We chose to make the first one a pop album and\u00a0Hallowed Ground<\/em>\u00a0a sprawling exploration of American roots music. We\u2019re not considered in the Americana category . . .\u201d\u00a0The album\u2019s adventurous spirit and artistic risk-taking have been both lauded and criticized over the years.\u00a0
