{"id":12507,"date":"2024-10-24T23:01:47","date_gmt":"2024-10-25T03:01:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/heavensmetalmagazine.com\/?p=12507"},"modified":"2024-10-25T11:09:31","modified_gmt":"2024-10-25T15:09:31","slug":"the-brave-carnival-of-sins","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/heavensmetalmagazine.com\/index.php\/2024\/10\/24\/the-brave-carnival-of-sins\/","title":{"rendered":"THE BRAVE: Carnival of Sins"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The Brave \u2013 Stayce Roberts, Malcolm Paris, John Spittle \u2013 are back with the third installment from the \u201cresurrected\u201d and newly inspired version of the iconic AOR\/hard rock band from the early \u201890s made famous by their debut Elefante brother produced <em>Battle Cries<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once again self-produced and self-released, <em>Carnival of Sins<\/em> remains true to the accessible, melodic hard rock of <a href=\"https:\/\/heavensmetalmagazine.com\/index.php\/2021\/08\/03\/the-brave-evies-little-garden\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Evie\u2019s Little Garden<\/em> <\/a>(2021) and its wonderful successor <a href=\"https:\/\/heavensmetalmagazine.com\/index.php\/2024\/09\/16\/the-brave-gravedigger\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Gravedigger<\/em> <\/a>(2022). The formula they\u2019ve got going here is both familiar\/retro and yet progressively \u201cnew,\u201d especially in the sound quality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Brave are successful in crafting a genuinely rock vibe while mixing in a worshipful\/praise (but not in the traditional CCM\/contemporary worship manner) element. While some of this may not appeal to metalheads, these songs ring loudly with truth and sincerity \u2026 and they rock with a humble conviction that is quite refreshing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The title track leads off with a strong message\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-medium-font-size\"><em><strong>\u201cStep inside the Carnival\/the Carnival of Sins\/You can be anything you want just as long as you give in\u2026\u201d<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2026and plenty of punch and melodic bliss to make the message stick.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-medium-font-size\"><em><strong>\u201cDon\u2019t waste another minute\/Looking for something in it\/Because it catches your eye\/Sideshows and magic provided by fanatics\/And offered up as a lie\/You\u2019re walking the tightrope now\u201d<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed aligncenter is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Carnival of Sins\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/nscbPWTEPKQ?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c<strong>When You Believe<\/strong>\u201d sounds just like a hopeful offering of faith lifted from the pages of late \u201880\u2019s\/early \u201890\u2019s AOR rock. Clean, pure \u2026 sincere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The somewhat drowsy pace and vibe of \u201c<strong>The Witching Hour<\/strong>\u201d perfectly channels the message of compromise which can occur in our greatest moments of weakness \u201cin the darkness, after midnight.\u201d The guitar solo late in the song emphasizes the urgency and seriousness of the message to stay true during these dark hours of loneliness. Drummer Spittle gets a chance in the outro run to improvise, and then the bluesy guitar puts it all to sleep with that final run of glory. Brilliantly crafted song from alpha to omega.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Think you got it all together \u201c<strong>Calendar Man<\/strong>?\u201d This is one of those contemporary The Brave songs which reeks of wisdom lyrically as musically it perfectly straddles the world of AOR melodic bliss with modern rock production quality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-medium-font-size\"><em><strong>\u201cThe Calendar Man was once an innocent guy\/Before the corporate world\/Took up all his time\u2026\u201d<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Subsequently, \u201c<strong>Lifeline<\/strong>\u201d is pure old school unapologetic, melodic balladic silk. Roberts shines with his humble and sincere praise, his voice so convincingly and compellingly genuine and filled with hope and appreciation that you can\u2019t help but want to sing along in accord.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Go ahead, \u201c<strong>Rise Again<\/strong>!\u201d This mid-tempo rocker is another song of praise, but with enough edge and grit to cut to the heart of the most devout rocker. There is some subtle guitar shred in this song that almost feels melodic metal, but this song drips of melodic rock honey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In contrast, \u201c<strong>Knock, Knock<\/strong>\u201d is one of my favorite songs on <em>Carnival of Sins<\/em> because it draws deep from the well of \u201870\u2019s (Styx\/Queen) operatic progressive rock. Not only are the vocal layers sublime, the drum grooves, the guitar rhythms and the message are timelessly radical, yet accessible all the same. The music is rife with great guitar and drum licks but that final vocal line steals the show\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-medium-font-size\"><em><strong>\u201cSomebody told him of the water\/That saves anybody in need\/Where anyone seeking salvation\/Can take of the cup and drink\u2026\u201d<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>One criticism at this point might be there are more of these AOR type songs than heavier rockers. I think \u201c<strong>Undertow<\/strong>\u201d falls fairly into that category; its softness may be just a bit too soft for this point in the album where fans\/listeners might need to hear just a bit more aggressiveness. Regardless, standing on its own merit, the song is genuine, confessional. We\u2019ve all been here, frustrated with where we\u2019re stuck \u2026 it works.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Similarly, \u201c<strong>The Better Part of Me\u201d<\/strong> feels a bit more pedestrian musically, but you can\u2019t argue with the lyrics, this one featuring Luke Easter on guest vocals, his contribution minimal, yet effective. <strong>\u201cStreets of Gold<\/strong>,\u201d for me at least, is a bit more effective. Its equally emotive qualities are better flushed out with a bit of drum tom play and a moving rhythm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Subsequently, the narrative \u201c<strong>My Extraordinary Life<\/strong>\u201d winds the album down to conclusion with a testimonial tale of wonder &#8211; the word-smithery here clearly the focus\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-medium-font-size\"><em><strong>\u201cIt\u2019s just my Extraordinary Life\/It\u2019s still a wonder I\u2019m alive\/It\u2019s like He\u2019s given me\/The chance to see who I could be\u2026<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-medium-font-size\"><em><strong>It\u2019s just my Extraordinary King\/ Who took my life and gave it wings\/My life is but an offering\/My Extraordinary Life\u201d<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>In finale, we have yet another balladic tune in \u201c<strong>Find My Way<\/strong>.\u201d I think the fairest criticism from rock fans of <em>Carnival of Sins<\/em> is going to be the mellow approach. Fair enough. <em>Evie\u2019s Little Garden<\/em> was diverse and edgy, and <em>Gravedigger<\/em> was extremely well-balanced. Regardless, these songs bleed with passion and sincerity which is to be praised.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed aligncenter is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The Witching Hour\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/qr-QWTqxvY8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><br><br>In summery, there is no doubt in my mind that <em>Carnival of Sins<\/em> will be one of the most listenable rock albums of the year. Yes, they\u2019ve stepped back a bit on the crunch and power, but the melodic glory surpasses any lack of aggression. The sound mix\/production is superb and fans can rejoice in yet another collection of inspiring songs for praise and edification of mind and spirit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Track Listing:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>1.
