{"id":13603,"date":"2025-01-09T19:35:46","date_gmt":"2025-01-10T00:35:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/heavensmetalmagazine.com\/?p=13603"},"modified":"2025-01-09T19:35:47","modified_gmt":"2025-01-10T00:35:47","slug":"review-perpetual-legacy-teodrama","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/heavensmetalmagazine.com\/index.php\/2025\/01\/09\/review-perpetual-legacy-teodrama\/","title":{"rendered":"Review: Perpetual Legacy &#8211; Teodrama"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Progressive Legacy<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Perpetual Legacy is a progressive symphonic group hailing from Brazil with much to offer up in the name of metal and rock in the name of the Creator. They released their debut in 2015 (<em>A New Symphony for Him<\/em>). And while I am only discovering this band for the first time in late 2024\/early 2025, what I\u2019ve since heard from that 2015 release is quite good. Fast forward almost a decade and the progression of the band in sound, instrumentation and songwriting is notably improved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Divine Drama<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Teodrama<\/em> is an epic conceptual \u201csymphony\u201d of metal thematically anchored to the Biblical sequence of the Creation, the Fall of mankind (into sin), the Redemption of mankind through Christ\u2019s atoning sacrifice and the Consummation of faith in Christ eternally. Musically, the closest reference points are Nightwish, Epica, Delain and Within Temptation. While most of the songs feature the melodic vocals of Michelle Rodovalho, there are the complementary harsh vocals of bassist Matheus Maia \u2013 who also happens to be one of the main songwriters here \u2013 thrown into the mix.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Divine Media<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This ambitious, seemingly theatrical, epic plays out over the course of 95 minutes and has been released on physical media as a 2 CD set in digipak with beautifully illustrated 20-page booklet by En Hakkore Records. The artwork here is simply, well &#8230; divine!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Progressive Simplicity<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>While <em>Teodrama <\/em>is deeply conceptual, the lyrics are amazingly accessible; there is a simplistic beauty to the presentation which is lost on many bands who endeavor to make their art too \u201cartful.\u201d Perpetual Legacy offer up a universe of spiritual enlightenment with just the right touch of detail to keep the fan of progressive music engaged while not over-complicating the essential nature of the story\/message.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Four Part Harmony<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>From a compositional and presentation perspective, there is a nice balance in material from each of the four \u201cseasons\u201d of His-Story here represented. <strong>Creation<\/strong> is represented by 5 songs, <strong>Fall<\/strong> by 4 songs, <strong>Redemption<\/strong> by 4 songs and <strong>Consummation<\/strong> by 5 songs. In the lyric booklet the artwork is matched beautifully with the 4 parts. Furthermore, each disc features introductory type songs in \u201cThe Trinity\u201d and \u201cThe Mediator.\u201d The net effect, from a conceptual viewpoint, is a perfect balance of art with musical and lyrical content.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Creation<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Interestingly, the opener \u201c<strong>The Trinity<\/strong>\u201d (Puritan Pray) is a quasi-choral\/instrumental one-minute statement of Perpetual Legacy\u2019s recognition of the centrality of \u201cThree in One, One in Three\u201d \u2013 Father, Son and Holy Spirit \u2013 within the framework of this <em>Teodrama<\/em>. The band credits <em>The Valley of Vision: A Collection of Puritan Prayers and Devotions<\/em> by Arthur Bennett as source material.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Written by keyboardist, Rafael Lobo, \u201c<strong>Ex Nihilo<\/strong>\u201d charges out of the gates with a power metal burner featuring not only Lobo\u2019s keys but also Rodovalho\u2019s ethereal, yet clear and decisive vocal outpouring which chronicles the \u201cfirst seven days\u201d of creation. Bassist Maia is credited with \u201c<strong>Glorious Creator<\/strong>\u201d which serves lyrically as a praise, not surprisingly, to God\u2019s \u201chandiwork\u201d in the physical world. Compositionally, this one is another power metal anthem, this time featuring a brilliant guitar solo from Lucas Fernandes and crafty drum work from Renan Costa ala Nightwish.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Slower Groove Grace<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Contrastingly, \u201c<strong>Before Creation<\/strong>\u201d slows things down just a bit, working in just a bit more progressive groove and diversity, yet the bridge and chorus sections feature pummeling double bass drum driven power metal. This song beautifully serves as segue to the elegant departure which is\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2026\u201d<strong> Grace<\/strong>,\u201d which features the truly beautiful qualities of Rodovalho\u2019s voice as she describes both the innocent and reverent cries and thanks of man\/woman uncorrupt. Not surprisingly, guitarist Fernandes \u2013 who wrote the music \u2013 delivers acoustic guitar grace in melody and solo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Symphonic Metal Hymn<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Subsequently, Lobo\u2019s \u201c<strong>Imago Dei<\/strong>\u201d \u2013 another strongly Nightwish\/Epic-influenced number \u2013 culminates the celebration and status of man within God\u2019s glorious creation. The hymn-like keyboards, the cinematic programming, the flutes, the choral arrangements intermixed with Michelle\u2019s singing, the dynamic drumming and the guitar leads highlight this band&#8217;s talent. Truly spectacular.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-medium-font-size\"><strong>\u201c<em>I blessed your labor, gave you callings to heed\/You are a little lower than God\/Summoned you to join me in my wondrous deed\/You\u2019re a little lower than God<\/em>\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:54px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Fall<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Subsequently, in brilliant transition \u2013 the minor chords, the darkening of the artwork \u2013 \u201c<strong>In the Cool of the Day<\/strong>\u201d (written by Maia) describes the initial aftermath of the \u201cfall of man.\u201d In addition to the change in \u201cscene,\u201d the music of Perpetual Legacy takes on another \u201cskin\u201d \u2013 one showcasing a more melodic accessible level, as well as a more progressive intricacy and vulnerable intimacy. This uncovering of another of the band\u2019s layers of talent gives early indication <em>Teodrama<\/em> has much to offer \u2013 more than just a symphonic power metal extravaganza.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Sin Twist<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c<strong>All Have Sinned<\/strong>\u201d makes the proclamation of fall with a twisting and complex composition with an unorthodox vocal melody and enough lurching starts\/stops to please fans of Dream Theater. I love the prose here which so succinctly and colorfully depicts man\u2019s fate\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-medium-font-size\"><em><strong>\u201cIn court, happiness won\u2019t be my cause\/The way of peace they don\u2019t understand\/There is no fear of God\/Don\u2019t you realize how patient God is with you\/and how His goodness wants to lead you to repentance?\u201d<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Collaborative Fall Reveal<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Oh, but it gets better with the Delain\/Within Temptation-like \u201c<strong>No Innocents Here<\/strong>.\u201d One of Perpetual Legacy\u2019s songwriters\u2019 most collaborative effort herein, this song takes a more contemporary progressive metal aggressive edge approach with a slower, heavier groove and adds the harsh vocals of bassist Maia alongside Rodovalho\u2019s soaring siren song. Not only are the guitar riffs here killer, but the bass guitar also shreds with abandon \u2013 this song almost sounding like a totally different band from that which preceded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed aligncenter is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"PERPETUAL LEGACY | No Innocents Here | Official Music Video\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/CSf7k3PlpkY?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Consequently, in epic fashion, Perpetual Legacy puts it all together on the finale track to the first segment of the story with \u201c<strong>Look at the Cross<\/strong>,\u201d the longest duration song on CD1. In a building fashion, both musically and lyrically (as the case against man grows increasingly damning), Maia\u2019s harsh vocals attain a greater significance and Rodovalho punches the message home using her native language in a quasi-spoken rant as the symphonic, power and prog elements converge to deliver the verdict of mankind,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-medium-font-size\"><strong><em>\u201cLight has come into the world, but people loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. But whoever lives by the truth come into the light, so that if may be seen plainly that what have done has been done in the sight of man.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Redemption<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In balance and harmony with the first \u201cact\u201d the opening salvo of the second portion of this epic drama features a brief introduction of sorts, \u201c<strong>The Mediator<\/strong>\u201d heralding the new King in symphonic grandeur. Once again, Maia\u2019s omnipresent bass features heavily on the similarly heralding \u201c<strong>Above the Sun<\/strong>.\u201d The bass guitar dominance continues with the dynamic and powerful \u201c<strong>Redemption<\/strong>,\u201d where Rodovalho\u2019s exhortation points to the promise of the Messiah. The operatic, yet accessible, vocal quality of Tarja (Turunen) comes to ear here as we are reminded, \u201cthere is no redemption far from Christ.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Justified Song Craft<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Subsequently, this redeeming work of Christ is exposited on the enigmatic \u201c<strong>Justified by Faith<\/strong>\u201d \u2013 easily one of the strongest songs on <em>Teodrama<\/em>. Despite the acoustic balladic intro, the song wonderfully builds into a chorus which serves half melodic declaration, half hymn of praise, cleverly incorporating the melody and words of Rich Mullins\u2019 \u201cAwesome God\u201d interposed with Rodovalho\u2019s own words and melody. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed aligncenter is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"PERPETUAL LEGACY | Justified By Faith | Official Lyric Video\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/W4OSqMzzc88?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The middle section backs down before it builds back up with the fierce vocals of Maia accompanied by a cacophony of heavy guitar and drumming in support of cries of \u201cSola Christus,\u201d \u201cSola Deo Goria,\u201d \u201cSola Fide\u201d and Sola Scripture.\u201d One final push to the end features the combined efforts of both singers and a reprise of the \u201cAwesome God\u201d chorus. Brilliant words, brilliant musical creativity and songcraft.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Contrastingly, the more somber \u201c<strong>Hero of Humanity<\/strong>\u201d nicely complements all that splendor with a more tender expression of the magnitude and impact of Christ\u2019s atoning work on the Cross. The middle solo section features a bass guitar solo followed by lead guitar, which is a unique approach and the impact within the context of this more ballad-like rocker is noteworthy. The organ tones and synth tubular bells beautifully accompany Rodovalho\u2019s gentle outro\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-medium-font-size\"><em><strong>\u201cDon\u2019t let your hearts be troubled and don\u2019t be afraid\/I\u2019ll not leave you as orphans\/I\u2019ll come to you.\u201d<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Consummation<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Not surprisingly, it is fitting that the final run of songs in God\u2019s drama leads off with \u201c<strong>Tetelestai<\/strong>,\u201d the perfect denouement, so to speak, as humankind\u2019s salvation begins with the finished work of Christ on the Cross. One of Perpetual Legacy\u2019s heaviest songs musically, Maia\u2019s growls depicting the gruesome work while Rodovalho claims the victory with her triumphant soaring, \u201cWhere, oh death, is your sting? Where, oh death, is your victory?\u201d The song features good pace, perfect balance of aggression and melody and more bass and guitar leads from Maia and Fernandes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the other hand, Lobo\u2019s \u201c<strong>Waiting for You<\/strong>\u201d features keyboard leads, diverse and dynamic drumming and praise worship vocals, but the song shifts into heavy riffing in the middle section before seamlessly catapulting towards the masterful sequence of songs comprising the finale.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Consequently, no story of God\u2019s redemptive work is complete without describing the final judgments. The fiery tandem of \u201c<strong>Babylon the Great<\/strong>\u201d and \u201c<strong>Judgement and Triumph<\/strong>\u201d serves well in this task, both songs featuring Revelational truth accompanied by grandiose power metal riffing, driving drums and choral vocal arrangements. Of note, Rodovalho\u2019s dynamic vocal style on the latter is particularly impressive \u2013 using her voice with a blend of operatic and more contemporary style akin to Sharon den Adel (Within Temptation).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While many of these songs ultimately point to and long for the return of the Lord, \u201c<strong>The End is Just the Beginning<\/strong>\u201d represents the culmination of that which has preceded. Perpetual Legacy pulls out all the stops and deploys all the musical and vocal tools in their armamentarium to bombard the listener with a glorious call of anticipation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-medium-font-size\"><em><strong>\u201cLet\u2019s sing together, hallelujah\/Salvation, glory and honor come from our God\/Holy, Holy, Holy, Holy is the Lord\/The Spirit and the Bride say, come\u201d<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Extra<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Apparently, \u201c<strong>Theme of My Songs<\/strong>\u201d is a reprise of sorts, or maybe just an epilogue giving thanks for it all. Musically the song reminds of a blend of Delain and Within Temptation, Rodovalho once again channeling Sharon den Adel. And let it be understood I mean this in a complimentary fashion. Despite emulating their influences, it is evident Perpetual Legacy has a distinct musical identity and unflapping desire to creatively praise the Creator!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Drama\u2019s End<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In summary, <em>Teodrama<\/em> obviously represents a tremendous effort on all levels and is both complex yet simultaneously accessible all within the first few listens, which is quite remarkable for a collection of songs amounting to 90 minutes of music. The level of concept building, graphic presentation, song writing, execution and mix\/production is excellent. No fan of symphonic power progressive metal should hesitate to experience Perpetual Legacy\u2019s epic drama. If I had heard this earlier in the year it would easily be in my 2024 top 10.
