{"id":14409,"date":"2025-04-06T23:52:29","date_gmt":"2025-04-07T03:52:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/heavensmetalmagazine.com\/?p=14409"},"modified":"2025-04-06T23:52:30","modified_gmt":"2025-04-07T03:52:30","slug":"review-feast-eternal-prisons-of-flesh","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/heavensmetalmagazine.com\/index.php\/2025\/04\/06\/review-feast-eternal-prisons-of-flesh\/","title":{"rendered":"Review: Feast Eternal &#8211; Prisons of Flesh"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">From the Vault Review: <em>Feast Eternal &#8211; Prisons of Flesh<\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Anyone who\u2019s been paying attention over the last decade or so to the death metal underground knows that there has been a massive surge of modern bands playing distinctly old-school death metal, taking their influences especially from bands such as <em>Timeghoul<\/em>, <em>Incantation<\/em>, <em>Demilich<\/em>, and <em>Entombed<\/em> (amongst many, many others). Bands like <em>Blood Incantation<\/em>, <em>Tomb Mold<\/em>, and <em>Gatecreeper<\/em> have almost broken into mainstream attention, and it seems that death metal has had something of a renaissance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That said, it\u2019s hard to find any Christian bands currently going for that OSDM-revivalist style, and you\u2019ve got to go back a couple of decades to find something similar to what\u2019s so en vogue these days (of course, there are exceptions, and I\u2019ll get to those! <em>Bloodcrown<\/em>, I\u2019m looking at you).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019ve found that sound in <em>Feast Eternal<\/em>, a little-known death metal act from Michigan that formed in the wake of <em>Mortification<\/em>\u2019s first album in 1991, making them one of the oldest Christian death metal acts around. However, despite their early inception, they didn\u2019t release a demo until 1994 and their first album until 1999! But what an album it is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em>Prisons of the Flesh<\/em> Review<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019ve found yourself really at home in the sounds peddled by much of the OSDM-revivalists, you\u2019ll find a ton to enjoy on <em>Prisons of the Flesh<\/em>. <em>Feast Eternal<\/em>\u2019s sound here echoes <em>Immolation<\/em>, <em>Adramelech<\/em>, early post-<em>Reek of Putrefaction<\/em> <em>Carcass<\/em>, and <em>Inhabit<\/em>-era <em>Living Sacrifice<\/em>, throwing elements from all those bands into a blender and spewing out some serious death metal carnage onto the listener\u2019s eardrums.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The guitar work here is just as violent and continually shifting as the drum work, touching on melody without entering melodeath territory. Every single track on here is a beast, and the album\u2019s raw yet clear production pretty much hits the sweet spot between murk and polish. Like <em>Immolation<\/em>, <em>Feast Eternal<\/em>\u2019s core sound focuses in on a kind of controlled chaos element that feels like the listener\u2019s ears are being hit from all sides at once. It never descends into being tech-death, nor into the full-on craziness of an early <em>Cryptopsy<\/em> record; instead, every instrument is just barely restrained enough to keep it all held together, but still is allowed to shred at maximum speed with maximum aggression. T.J. Humlinski\u2019s roars are excellent\u2014clear, furious, and commanding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In terms of more recent sounds, <em>Prisons of Flesh<\/em> matches the mix of ferocity, dynamism, and brutality of Danish\/Turkish OSDM band <em>Hyperdontia<\/em>, and if you\u2019re a fan of that band\u2019s work as of late (think <em>Hideous Entity<\/em> and <em>Harvest of Malevolence<\/em>), you\u2019ll really dig this one; likewise, if you like the blackened element in the vocals similar to those heard on <em>Bloodwork<\/em>\u2019s <em>World Without End<\/em>, <em>Feast Eternal<\/em> obliges on that count in a big way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Themes and Lyrics<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Feast Eternal<\/em>\u2019s focus on this one seems to be on this life as a vale of tears. Songs like \u201c<em>Of Service and Suffering<\/em>\u201d especially touch on this, but \u201c<em>Forgetting God<\/em>\u201d serves as a reminder of the passing nature of this life with its attendant sorrows. Like <em>Antidemon<\/em> and <em>Bloodwork<\/em>, <em>Feast Eternal<\/em> also aren\u2019t afraid to confront the theme of suicide as fueled by a kind of self-deception in regard to one\u2019s being rejected or forgotten by God (see \u201c<em>Into Eternity<\/em>\u201d). Lest we forget that this is indeed a death metal album, songs like \u201c<em>Ashes to Dust<\/em>\u201d and its lyrical descriptions of damnation (very Dantean, I might add) will remind the listener rather quickly. It\u2019s an album that paints a pretty stark portrait of internal suffering, but also urges the listener on to hope and redemption in Christ.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Final Thoughts<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Overall, this is yet another overlooked gem. <em>Feast Eternal<\/em> would go dark for some time with line-up changes before releasing their second album and going in a more melodic death metal direction (relatively speaking), but as it is, <em>Prisons of Flesh<\/em> remains a great example of how to mix brutality with a sense of structure. Worth your time if you can find a copy!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">For Fans Of:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul
