{"id":15630,"date":"2025-09-03T15:05:02","date_gmt":"2025-09-03T19:05:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/heavensmetalmagazine.com\/?p=15630"},"modified":"2025-09-03T15:05:02","modified_gmt":"2025-09-03T19:05:02","slug":"review-winters-dawn-wandering-through-the-realm-of-frosted-beauty","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/heavensmetalmagazine.com\/index.php\/2025\/09\/03\/review-winters-dawn-wandering-through-the-realm-of-frosted-beauty\/","title":{"rendered":"Review: Winter\u2019s Dawn &#8211;&nbsp;Wandering Through the Realm of Frosted Beauty"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>From the Vault Review &#8211; Winter\u2019s Dawn &#8211;&nbsp;<em>Wandering Through the Realm of Frosted Beauty<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Back in the late 2000\u2019s\/early 2010\u2019s, the label known as Nokturnal Hemizphear (which later morphed into Metal Helm) was one of the best Christian extreme metal labels around. The amount of work that went into the releases by that label really showed, and there was just something so exciting about how the label presented itself and the bands it carried. The passion and the interest was palpable, both in terms of evangelical zeal and in showcasing some of the finest releases the extreme metal underground had to offer. I miss it. But those days are gone, and I still find myself revisiting them now and again in the form of releases exclusive to the label.&nbsp;<em>Wandering Through the Realm of Frosted Beauty<\/em>&nbsp;by short-lived unblack metal act Winter\u2019s Dawn is one of those releases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Winter\u2019s Dawn was a UK band composed of two members, Raptor and Amnon (who released much more material under his other project, Quest for Serenity), and&nbsp;<em>Wandering Through the Realm of Frosted Beauty<\/em>&nbsp;is their sole release. No demo\u2019s, no EP\u2019s, nothing to mine backwards through, just this one album. Given the full treatment by Nokturnal Hemizphear, the album boasted gorgeous&nbsp;<em>In the Nightside Eclipse<\/em>-esque artwork, alongside a thoughtfully laid out digipak. In some ways, they looked poised to be a big thing in the unblack scene, but it was not to be.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Beginning with a track composed entirely of keyboard and synth work, Winter\u2019s Dawn take their time getting down to the black metal sounds. This record isn\u2019t here to blow your head off, but to take you on a journey through the sonic landscape it intends to portray. Immediately noticeable is the oddly-warm guitar tone. It doesn\u2019t \u201cburn\u201d with an icy tone like many other black metal records, but actually sounds immediate, almost comforting, and quite up-front. But when the second track actually kicks in, it all kind of comes together and makes sense in terms of what these two were going for. Crisp drumming loaded with tom rolls and cymbal crashes and very shrill, raspy vocals combine with the aforementioned guitar tone, and even though there is no blinding, blizzard-like speed, it all still manages to work together to create that feeling of being out on a January night in a T-shirt. Raptor\u2019s high-pitched cries really add to the cold feeling in a way I can\u2019t quite explain.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The highlight, at least for me, of the album is the title track that descends into a powerful, grooving slog near the end that is quite memorable. \u201cLandscape of Winter\u201d sees the band at their fastest, with Amnon approaching somewhat of a semblance of a near-blastbeat, while \u201cFrost Fall\u201d offers a wall of slower-paced sound, dense and frigid. It\u2019s a sound that I find myself going back to time and again, even in spite of a few of my criticisms of this fine record (the distracting tom rolls that seem to forbid the songs from flowing along, the tinkling keyboard notes that occasionally rear their heads, especially on \u201cEmbraced by Ice\u201d). Lyrically-speaking, Winter\u2019s Dawn use the season of winter and the feeling of cold as an allegory in which to couch one\u2019s personal journey of repentance. The winter landscape seems to me to be \u201cthe world\u201d &#8211; something which,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.oca.org\/orthodoxy\/the-orthodox-faith\/spirituality\/orthodox-spirituality\/the-world-and-the-flesh\">as Fr. Thomas Hopko notes, has a double meaning<\/a>. In one sense, the world is composed of creation; Winter\u2019s Dawn constantly highlight this when they focus especially in on the beauty of the icy world that the protagonist finds themselves in. However, as far as I understand it, \u201cthe world\u201d in Scripture (for example, in 1 John 2:15-17) and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.unseenwarfare.net\/the-world\">in the writings of the Church Fathers is also something negative as well<\/a>, something that encompasses sin, the flesh (the passions), and the devil. With Winter\u2019s Dawn, they riff on this throughout the entire album &#8211; the beauty of the natural world pointing to a Creator, the void that cannot be filled (cf. St. Augustine,&nbsp;<em>Confessions<\/em>&nbsp;1:I), and the eventual realization of the desperate human need for salvation. The album ends not just on a note of repentance, but also on one of hope and peace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In retrospect, it\u2019s an album that left a minor legacy behind it, but never functioned as the foundational springboard it could have due to the band deciding to call it quits not long after. For those who are really keen, a Youtube upload exists with a glimpse of what was going to be the band\u2019s sophomore album, \u201cBlackened Hymns for the Fallen Damned\u201d &#8211;&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=GS0-D67bUeU&amp;list=RDGS0-D67bUeU&amp;start_radio=1\">you can check it out here<\/a>. Otherwise, we have to be content with this one record from what could have been a great unblack metal band.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Copies are hard to find apparently, but you can still listen to the
