NICK LAYTON\u2019s MOONLIT MASQUERADE<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nick Layton is an extraordinary axeslinger. If you love melodic metal, let me make sure his name is in your vocabulary. He\u2019s very talented, but soft spoken and humble in person. I met him at Immortal festival, playing with his band Reign of Glory, on 3 consecutive years (with 3 different vocalists). Nick\u2019s talent and songwriting skill tends to attract musicians of a high caliber and his latest project Moonlit Masquerade is a perfect example of that. Only the first single \u201dWreckage\u201d is out, with Zak Stevens (Savatage) on vocals, and already excitement is mounting for the final product. We went straight to the source to hear all about it.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hi Nick, how are you? <\/strong>So tell us all about Moonlit Masquerade and how it came about? I’m sure you’re very excited about some of the big names playing on it. How did they come to be involved?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hi Chris, thanks for doing this interview. Moonlit Masquerade came about as a total surprise really. My record label in Germany, Limb Music, asked me if I\u2019d be interested in re-recording some older instrumental tracks from my solo CD Storming the Castle<\/em>, but with more epic arrangements (choirs, keyboards, strings, etc). But what happened is that as I started working on new arrangements with my keyboard buddy Ted Gardner, we ended up writing completely new material that was better than the instrumentals. So we decided to pivot early on and go for some brand new tracks with vocals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I never dreamed we\u2019d end up getting the vocalists and other players we got. Dream come true! Basically, once we had the new songs recorded we started reaching out to different vocalists that we liked to gauge their interest in singing on the tracks. Most of them said yes!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

 What does the name Moonlit Masquerade mean?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I\u2019ve always been fascinated with Masquerade balls, and we needed a title for the project. I envisioned all of the guest musicians as part of the \u201cguest list\u201d to the masquerade ball.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

 I understand that the instrumental song and the song with Christian Liljegren were bonuses for the 3 song ep. When the full album comes out in May, will Zak Stevens be doing all the vocals for the album?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

We wanted to do a special bite sized EP as an appetizer to the full album later this year. Zak will only be on the one track which is the first single \u201cWreckage\u201d, but we have many other great vocalists throughout the album! I think people are gonna love this stuff.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

 “Wreckage” sounds uncannily like a Savatage song. Ironic, since Savatage is touring for the first time in forever. Did you write this music with Zak in mind? Is MM planned to be a studio only release, or is there more in the works?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yes, I wrote \u201cWreckage\u201d specifically for Zak and wanted to capture that classic Gutter Ballet<\/em>, Edge Of Thorns<\/em>, Wake Of Magellan<\/em> magic with the song. Ted did a great job on the keyboard parts to help with the Jon Oliva vibe. Right now MM is a studio only release, but you never know where things could go. I\u2019m thrilled Savatage is back touring and hope they do a new album soon!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

 I see that Reign of Glory will be playing the Light the Dark festival in Sweden in March. That’s exciting! Will it be your first time playing in Europe? Will you be playing any other shows while you’re out there? Any other plans for Reign of Glory in 2026?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yes, we are excited to play the Light The Dark festival. It will indeed be my first trip over to Europe. We will also have Christian Liljegren join us for a song or two onstage, so that will be cool for the fans, and for me personally. Right now that is the only show Reign Of Glory has on the books, but we are looking at other live possibilities. We do plan to release a new album sometime in 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I’m sure that some of our audience only knows the name Nick Layton from Reign of Glory or the Layton\/Martin hymns project and is entirely unaware of your band FireWolfe. Can you tell us a little about the band and the albums you released? Is it strictly a mainstream band? And is there any future Firewolfe material coming out?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

FireWolfe has 3 albums out, all on Limb Music\u2014FireWolfe<\/em> self titled (2011), We Rule The Night<\/em> (2014) and Conquer All Fear<\/em> (2021). The first two featured vocalist David Fefolt (Masi, Valhalla, Hawk), and the last one featured Freddy Krumins (James Byrd).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I personally love the band and wish we could have kept the line up together long enough to tour and make more albums. But we do have plans to reignite the band with a new singer in 2026-27 and do a new record and some touring in Europe hopefully.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

 Nick, you are a phenomenal guitarist and songwriter. What inspires you to continue perfecting your craft? What makes a successful album for you?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thank you! I love to create. I could sit in my studio and write songs all day long everyday if I had the time! As far as perfecting my craft, I have always felt that being my best at my craft is my way of honoring God, Jesus Christ, who gave me my gifts and talents. So I only try to do my best for Him, trying not to compare to what others are doing, but just staying focused on my mission of being the best guitarist, songwriter, performer and band mate I can be for God\u2019s glory, the good of others and my own gladness of heart. I think a successful album for me comes down to having great songs first and foremost, that are well recorded and produced, with exciting performances from each band member. I also think it helps, especially in my genre, to have songs that sit together well as a whole and have variety in the tempos and grooves, while staying true to the overall sound of the band. So you probably won\u2019t hear us playing any heavy metal polka music anytime soon!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

 Power metal can be a tricky genre. It can’t be phoned in. Usually bands are either good, or no good. Like you, I love a great power metal band. What makes such a band great for you?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Again, for me it always comes down to the songs first. Are they catchy with good choruses I can sing along to? Do the arrangements work with great intros, verses, choruses, etc? Are the guitar players good with melody and chops\u2026and even more importantly, do I enjoy the singer\u2019s tone and melodic approach? There is a lot that goes into it for me, which is why I\u2019m very picky! \ud83d\ude42 But if the music checks all those boxes I\u2019ll probably like it as long as it\u2019s well produced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You have anything else cooking in the kitchen that our readers will want to hear about?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
