Bands across the scene have wrestled openly with these themes. Artists like Demon Hunter<\/strong>, Memphis May Fire<\/strong>, August Burns Red<\/strong>, Wolves at the Gate<\/strong>, Islander<\/strong>, Convictions<\/strong>, Blue Fire Horizon<\/strong>, Red Calling<\/strong>, and Magdalene Rose<\/strong> have all contributed to a culture where honesty about internal battles is not seen as weakness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Within this community, a phrase has begun appearing more frequently among artists and fans alike: #choosetolive<\/strong>. It is a simple phrase, but for many people it represents something profound\u2014the daily decision to stay, to keep fighting, and to seek help rather than suffer alone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Growing up in a pastor\u2019s household, he experienced a sharp contrast between public faith and private turmoil.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAt the same time, behind the scenes, there was a lot of turbulence in my family life. Growing up, I remember knock-down, drag-out fights between my mom and dad, and fights between me and my dad. Things were intense at home \u2014 but then, in the very same day, we\u2019d go to church, sing worship songs, hear a powerful message, and in a way, we\u2019d become the \u2018fix\u2019 for everyone else\u2019s problems.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Eventually that pressure collapsed into a crisis that forced him to confront mental health directly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThat was my first real encounter with mental health \u2014 not as an idea, but as something unavoidable and deeply personal.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Isolation later became another challenge, particularly because of the physical limitations he lives with.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAnother big factor for me is isolation. Because I live with cerebral palsy and dyscalculia, I\u2019ve never been able to drive\u2026 that limitation can still lead to isolation if I\u2019m not careful.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Over time, Sassano began developing practical habits that helped stabilize his mental health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhat helps is staying productive, but also giving myself room to trust the process. Building meaningful relationships, surrounding myself with people who share similar goals, and allowing myself to rest without guilt are all important.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Physical discipline also became part of that process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAnother practical thing I do is try to stay physically active\u2026 when my body is in better shape and I have some kind of routine, things start to align mentally too.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of the most important lessons he has learned involves the relationship between faith and professional help.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBut when it comes to mental health, we often act like prayer is the only step required\u2026 prayer is incredibly important \u2014 but it\u2019s not always a one-size-fits-all solution.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He explains that faith and counseling should not be seen as opposing ideas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI believe faith and practical help can coexist. Counseling, accountability, routines, and prayer aren\u2019t in competition with each other \u2014 they\u2019re meant to work together.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Much of Sassano\u2019s music reflects these themes directly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cA large portion of my catalog centers around mental health\u2026 Not My Name<\/em> deals with disabilities and labels. Not Unreachable<\/em> dives into anxiety. Happy Family<\/em> addresses domestic abuse.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Through performances in prisons, recovery events, and outreach festivals, he has seen how those stories resonate across very different life experiences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhat I\u2019ve learned is that pain is universal.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trevor Tyson \u2013 Heal The Hurt<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vocalist of Heal the Hurt<\/strong>, a band built around honesty, brotherhood, and confronting mental health directly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For Trevor Tyson<\/strong>, the turning point came when anxiety and burnout manifested physically.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAwareness has become one of the greatest tools in my life. You cannot heal what you refuse to acknowledge.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Touring and performing bring incredible opportunities, but they also carry emotional demands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBand life is both beautiful and demanding.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tyson explains that the band intentionally created an environment where mental health conversations are normal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe have built a culture in Heal The Hurt where honesty is normal. If someone is struggling, we talk about it. Brotherhood is not pretending everything is fine. Brotherhood is making sure no one carries weight alone.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For James<\/strong>, mental health first became real after a panic attack at eighteen that resulted in an ambulance ride and months of uncertainty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Over the years, he discovered that small daily habits could significantly affect emotional stability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHonestly, what helps me most that I\u2019ve noticed is diet, and sleep.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Creatively, anxiety has often fueled his songwriting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHonestly it\u2019s a blessing and a curse\u2026 during those times is when I\u2019m the most creative.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYes, my entire album Testimonies<\/em> is mostly themed around tough times I or friends have had.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAs a Christian, I tie the hope of Christ into it as best I can.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When someone asks where to start in addressing mental health, his advice is straightforward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cFirst I\u2019d say to seek Christ\u2026 then talk to someone you trust.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
