<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This man is quite extraordinary. Some of you might first remember him as the younger brother of the eloquent and front-and-center spokesperson for Stryper. When they exploded on the scene, they were suddenly the greatest show on earth for us believing metal heads.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“How could this be? Music this heavy and this fantastic – all for the One King we bow down and worship to?!”<\/em><\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Stryper’s arrival on the scene was a metallic breath of fresh air to hungry young lads such as myself. To borrow a trait from the Apostle Paul, here I was, one of God’s people, yet I was still also a citizen of Rome. I loved Jesus with all my heart. He had set me free, but I was part of a mostly unreached people group with its own dress, its own language, and its own customs. Four metal missionaries from Orange County, California, suddenly pierced through the veil and brought the light of Jesus. Stryper did all that – with the help of God Almighty Himself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So when Michael Sweet grew into the role of spokesperson for Stryper, his giftings made a way for him. He has since steered the yellow and black aircraft carrier around the world and released 18 studio albums of excellent quality. Now it is apparent how strong this part of the Stryper foundation is. Michael’s voice is par excellence. It’s multi-octave range has few rivals. In the big picture, the whole package of his throat delivers the raw, intense power of a sky-high water fountain and the soft, soothing smoothness of a calm stream. Think Dennis DeYoung of Styx, Steve Walsh of Kansas, or Klaus Meine of Scorpions. Each of these guys can tear paper off walls and melt the candles and the hearts in the audience with tender balladry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As a sidenote, let us not forget that Michael just might be the better of the two guitar players in the band. Nor should we forget how much the background vocals (Oz, Tim, and now Perry) are integral to their signature sound.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But with heavy metal singer solo albums comes a backlash – a war of words and dashed expectations. “How could my hero wimp out on me?” I get that. I understand that if Rob Halford came out with a Broadway musical, it might flip Judas Priest fans out. Come to think of it, that might be a really cool musical offering. (Rob?) When someone has talent beyond one niche or one real specialty, they have to be let out of their cage. As an example, I think my favorite tune sung by Iron Maiden’s Bruce Dickinson is “Tears of a Dragon,” from his Tattooed Millionaire<\/em> album (partly because of the spiritual-sounding poetry of “I throw myself into the sea, release the wave, let it wash over me…” but also because of the soft, melodic sounds thereof).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Part of the Stryper package has always been the ballads. Think Styx with “Come Sail Away” on the same album (<em>The Grand Illusion<\/em>) as the bombastic title track and the powerful rocker, “Miss America.” The dynamics of soft and loud create higher highs and more intensity when the band kicks in with force. We heard hints of it with “You Won’t Be Lonely” from <em>The Yellow and Block Attack<\/em> debut EP. It reared its pretty head with “Together As One” on <em>Soldiers Under Command<\/em>. I’m a dude. It wasn’t my favorite song on the album, but I could appreciate the beauty of it. How many weddings was it performed in by my fellow metalheads? It took center stage with “Honestly,” which took Stryper from clubs to arenas almost overnight. It’s part of the overall package, so we probably expect to hear more of it with a solo album, do we not?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The lead-off track here is also the title track, and it’s a beautiful, mesmerizing song that really describes what Stryper’s career is all about. I’m not talking about the world-class headbanging and multi-platinum success, but the spiritual side – the reason for the season, as it were. It’s like the perfect worship song for us heavy metallers. It’s also the perfect inspirational tune for the middle-of-the-roaders in the church pews (if they would listen). “The majesty and glory of the master plan.” It’s beautiful and it’s memorable, because not every singer can pull off this type of “listen to every word, every syllable” type of delivery. Dude will be 63 on our nation’s 250th birthday this year. How he can pull this off is amazing. He’s just a great, gifted singer. That’s all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If the less-balanced headbanger among us was the gatekeeper put in charge of releasing these songs to us, we might not ever hear melodic, bouncing tunes like the Beatlesque BGVs in “Believer” or the Neil Diamond-like “You Lead I’ll Follow.” Keith Green would be proud of this mid-tempo rocker – complete with horns. These are both great tunes, albeit it far from the Stryper catalog.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wouldn’t it be cool to hear “Desert Streams” on the radio (or played as “special music” in a Sunday morning worship service)?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Believer” features some of those older, almost Bachman-Turner Overdrive guitar tones. “Again” slows things down with soft organ-like keyboards that befit a solo blue laser spotlight over a piano as the voice commands the room. “Lord” features some female BGVs that could put this on the Grand Old Opry stage, as it’s a great prayer. The chorus hook is really catchy. Gotta love that guitar solo, too. Almost like a little stamp that keeps us from forgetting who we are listening to. (With this reviewer’s luck, watch, it might’ve been a guest player. Ha!)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Eternally” could have been a great Stryper ballad off any of its 18 studio albums.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Faith” is another slow tune that could have been used to win our parents over back in the ’80s (if we had that problem of parental over-guidance associated with the long hair, weird clothes, and demon-bashing drums).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Worship You” features Michael belting out a declaration to just worship God. It’s a light pop rocker that allows his voice to show off but in deference to the subject matter. When you hear a voice this good, your ears follow with glee. Not an instant fan of that guitar tone, but the chorus is commanding. I can feel this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wow. After one listen, I’m willing to call this good. Real good. We know it’s a departure, another side of lightning in a bottle, but done so very well.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
