A Real Big Disclaimer: Slam, or slamming brutal death metal, is arguably one of the most extreme of all the death metal genre\u2019s many offspring, and even the Christian bands in this style often make use of extremely gory imagery and confrontational lyrics, though not without a higher purpose behind it. I shouldn’t really have to write this, but a band\u2019s mention in this list is for the purpose of\u00a0documenting<\/strong>\u00a0this particular style’s history in the Christian metal underground, not for the purpose of necessarily endorsing everything about their lyrics, approach, etc.There’s definitely aspects of a few bands that I find myself uncomfortable with personally, but other readers will differ. Use your own best judgment.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I\u2019m a child of the 80\u2019s. I was too young to watch, let alone enjoy, the birth of Christian heavy metal. That, and I\u2019m pretty sure such a thing would have horrified virtually the entire Christian community I grew up in. The worship music I grew up with as a kid was an amalgamation of anything from \u201cThe Old Rugged Cross\u201d to the Wedgewood Trio. Rock music, heavy metal, whatever – it was pretty much anathema in my world. But this was then – back around the time that bands like Mortification and Vengeance Rising were causing shock and consternation for their ferocious music and controversial album covers. The mid-90\u2019s saw this happen too – bands like Lament had their first album cover censored, and Antestor met with almost as much criticism from other Christians as they did from the secular metal scene. Nowadays, Christian metal bands keep pushing the envelope in this manner, and none more so at times than the bands that fall into the world of Christian slam. Slam (also known as slamming brutal death metal) is an outgrowth of brutal death metal in the early 1990’s. You can trace its origins all the way back to the New York death metal scene – Internal Bleeding, Pyrexia, and Devourment, with Suffocation providing a common root. Like deathcore, with which it shares much in common sonically, slam\u2019s key emphases are an obsession with breakdowns and brutality at the expense of almost everything else. Slam metal is often played with a focus on synchronizing the instruments and vocals so that they all hit as hard and as singularly as possible; think of a pile driver. We\u2019re talking ultra-low, gurgled and guttural vocals, down-tuned and chugging guitars, copious breakdowns, and a lyrical obsession with almost everything Liverpool\u2019s Carcass use to revel in but often without the philosophical thought undergirding it (vegetarianism\/veganism, materialistic realism). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Needless to say, slam metal\u2019s lyrical themes are definitely not for the faint of heart or weak of stomach. Much of secular slam\u2019s associated artwork and lyrics, for the most part, showcase extreme violence and horror in a way that can make classic death metal bands seem tame by comparison. Documenting a scene like this is tricky in a sense, but it exists and it’s worth looking at. Just like other extreme metal subgenres such as black metal, Christian musicians haven\u2019t shied away from playing a particular style albeit from a different lyrical approach. That said, Christian slam acts have their work cut out for them. How, you might ask, can Christian musicians play this kind of music and appeal to listeners of it while still  holding true to what is good? It isn\u2019t easy, I expect; and in my personal view, it doesn’t always work in some cases. But as St. Paul once wrote, \u201cTo the weak I became weak, that I might win the weak. I have become all things to all men, that I might by all means save some. I do it all for the sake of the gospel, that I may share in its blessings\u201d (1 Corinthians 9:22-23, RSV). I know there\u2019s a specific context to this verse but I do think it has functioned as an inspiration for many Christian metal bands; really, my point here that I wish to make is that one must speak the language, spoken, written or visual that one\u2019s audience can and will understand and relate to. At the same time, how much can Jerusalem have to do with Athens, so to speak? And how far can the imagery and lyrical content go before it just feels like Christian window-dressing over what are simply by-the-numbers extreme gore and graphic violence? Food for thought.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As is often the case, the Christian metal scene was slow to follow with its own slam bands, perhaps due to the extreme nature of the subgenre even by death metal standards. But if we go way back to 1993, back when secular bands like Pyrexia, Internal Bleeding and Suffocation were laying the groundwork for what would come to be known as slam metal (the term itself was originally used by Internal Bleeding to describe their unique style of brutal death metal), the Christian metal scene was also obviously paying attention. Cue a very obscure death metal band known as The Risen. Though The Risen have only one recorded song (“Mortal Decay,” released on a split with Royal Anguish) to their credit, it\u2019s a bruiser, and a fine example of what could be termed early or proto-slam metal when it was released in 1993. At first, it seems like Crimson Thorn-like brutal death metal, but give it a bit, and the song quickly ends up diving headlong into a classic chugging slam riff augmented by some seriously guttural vocal work. Sadly, the band seems to have never released anything else. A shame, too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some years would pass before the style caught on. But it would be Costa Rica, of all places, that would see one of the first acts to play the style. Aceldama formed in 2005, though they didn\u2019t release their first full-length until 2010. Beginning as more of a brutal death metal band, their style has definitely evolved into slam, incorporating elements of more traditional brutal death metal into their sound, making their albums ideal for those who are looking for more than simple hammering breakdowns. Of course, the band doesn\u2019t shy away from the ultra-gory album art normally associated with slam as a genre, though it\u2019s not without an underlying message and purpose. What’s interesting about Aceldama is their penchant for philosophical reflection in their lyrics; though the Christian content in their lyrics on later albums isn’t always blatant, it undergirds it. Their third album, Desbridamiento de la Miseria<\/em>, is about as heinously heavy as it gets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Though Aceldama’s music evolved into the style, some bands in the 2000\u2019s began as full-on slam acts. Two of the earliest from this era include Necroptic Remnants (originally known as Impulsive Disembowelment), and Disarticulating Extinguishment (a real mouthful of a band name). Both present the slam style in the most extreme way possible, and both would only release a small handful of songs before disbanding, but are crucial acts to know when it comes to Christian slam. Psalms of Wrath<\/em> (Disarticulating Extinguishment) and Devouring Discarnate Immortality<\/em> remain essential early records for understanding the sound of Christian metal\u2019s first forays into the genre proper. Furthermore, a tiny demo entitled Negation<\/em> by a solo project called Widow and the Son (masterminded by Zack Plunkett who would later go full-on with Abated Mass of Flesh) also remains an oft-mentioned release in the scene. Of course, one name that will often come up when it comes to Christian slam is The Empty Tomb, especially the project\u2019s self-titled EP from 2009, though there does seem to be some serious controversy online over whether this was actually a Christian project or not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The high point, however, in the history of Christian slam is without a doubt, Abated Mass of Flesh. In any discussion on the style, they should be the major name being dropped repeatedly. Formed in 2011 by brothers Zack and Matthew Plunkett, Abated Mass of Flesh was only just slightly more palatable than the above two acts, coating their music in a dirty, grimy and guttural sound that made most contemporary deathcore sound like radio rock (though fans of old-school Nailed. Dead. Risen.<\/em> – era Impending Doom will find themselves in comfortable territory here). The band would later come to increasingly deathcore-like sonic territory on some records (though their Not Burned<\/em> EP from 2020 slams hard), but earlier works like The Omen King<\/em> and Abhorrent Postmortal <\/em>Viscissity<\/em> remain iconic works of the slam style. As most who read this magazine or know the underground know, Abated Mass of Flesh no longer identifies as a Christian band; that said, the greater part of the band\u2019s discography remains essential listening for anyone interested in Christian slam metal on even a remote level, and much of their recent work still provides tremendous food for thought for Christian metal fans to chew on. In my view, the lyrics to the their latest album, Rebirthing the Vile<\/em>, exhibit a real and tremendous struggle with politicized belief, as well as (I feel) the concept of sin as interpreted through an Augustinian-esque framework; for those who can approach it from a grounded Christian perspective, I think there\u2019s a lot of food for thought and issues to engage with here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After Abated Mass of Flesh came several other acts in the wake that band left behind. Deathcore would still hold sway in the mainstream, but the slamming brutal death metal style was still alive and well.The 2010\u2019s saw even more slam acts begin to proliferate off the heels of the initial 2000\u2019s ones. Bands like Godsfarm (formed in 2015, though the project didn\u2019t release a full-length album until 2022!), the short-lived Cardiac Rupture (which, as I understand it, no longer identifies as Christian), Resurrected Divinity (formed in 2019 after the artist, thanks be to God, left behind his former ultra-graphic secular music projects when he became a Christian), Atrocity (from California), and Nyctalopia. Nyctalopia would end up causing some controversy over their extremely gory cover art used for the band\u2019s lone yet stellar release, Flesh Slayer<\/em>, even in spite of the artist\u2019s explanations for it. Musically, however, Flesh Slayer <\/em>stands out amongst the crowd for its willingness to add new atmospheric elements to the tried-and-true formula of slam\u2019s chugging breakdowns and ultra-gutturals, and would prove itself to be a standout release. Though not describing themselves as an explicitly-Christian band, Australia\u2019s Revulsed (featuring the legendary Jayson Sherlock of Mortification\/Horde\/Paramaecium fame) still seem to fall into somewhat of a \u201cfaith-adjacent\u201d category, picking up where Suffocation left off in the early 90\u2019s with 2015’s Infernal Atrocity<\/em> before going full-on slam with their 2023 release entitled Cerebral Contamination<\/em>. As an aside, it\u2019s a bit odd that they don\u2019t seem to classify themselves as a Christian act; songs like \u201cDeistic Repudiation\u201d and \u201cMonotheistic Postulation\u201d extol Jesus and the Holy Trinity, so I\u2019m not entirely sure what\u2019s up there.With the 2020\u2019s came two more acts that couldn\u2019t be more different in many ways – the more traditionalist-sounding Mohler, and the progressive slam of Dehumanize. Formed by brothers Brian and Grant Mohler in 2020, Mohler focuses on a chaotic yet very traditional old-school slam sound that is singularly intent on bludgeoning your ear drums to a pulp and emphasizes a sense of disjointedness. It\u2019s easy to almost get lost in the storms of pig squeals, sandworm gurgles, and off-kilter drum\/guitar noise. In effect, Mohler creates a swirling maelstrom of a slam storm and demolishes anything in its path. They might not be the heaviest-sounding slam act, but they are definitely the most intense. Above All<\/em> is prime slam for those who love the style, without a doubt, though I\u2019ve never understood the band\u2019s use of explicit language during live shows (at least, on the live videos of the band I\u2019ve come across). To me, it just seems odd for a Christian band with such God-glorifying lyrics as they have to be using expletives on stage between songs. Again, I\u2019m not trying to pull the stick out of the eye of another while ignoring the giant log in my own; I\u2019m not here to judge or be a gatekeeper, self-righteous Christian, or the scene police, it just makes me pause and wonder. What are your thoughts on it? Perhaps, in a way, it\u2019s to speak in the language of the scene, a concept I always harp on. Regardless of it all, Mohler are a band to watch out for if you\u2019re at all into Christian slam metal, especially with a new album in the works.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But it is arguably Dehumanize that take the prize for being the most standout act in Christian slam since Abated Mass of Flesh\u2019s heyday. While their debut album from 2017, That Which is Sown<\/em>, is premium slam material, their 2024 release Superbia Falsum Deum Creat<\/em> is an incredible work of almost cosmic-slam that stretches the boundaries without breaking them. Progressive and expansive in their approach, unafraid to tinker with and inject new life into a genre that often becomes mired in simplistic brutality at the expense of all else, Dehumanize absolutely annihilate all opposition with their guttural slam meets cosmic death metal style, especially as heard on tracks like \u201cWar of Attrition. \u201dA breath of fresh air indeed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the end, slam as a style of metal remains just as polarizing as it\u2019s ever been. It\u2019s not a style I\u2019ve been particularly a fan of over the years, despite my love of extreme metal in general. That said, my opinion has softened much thanks to records like Flesh<\/em> Slayer<\/em>, Desbridamiento de la Miseria<\/em>, and Superbium Falsum Deum <\/em>Creat<\/em>. And really, it’s not about my opinion – people who love slam love it and it’s good to know that there are Christian acts out there playing the style, even if it all ends up courting controversy at times. The chugathon breakdowns, ridiculously deep gutturals, and simplistic hammering approach is definitely an acquired taste, but when brutal deathcore acts like Desolate Tomb, Eternal After Death and Voluntary Mortification just aren\u2019t heavy enough for you, well, it might be time to go the slam route.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
