For the second straight year, I had the privilege of attending and helping behind the scenes at\u00a0Breaking Darkness Music Festival<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0in Hickory, North Carolina. Organized by\u00a0Seth Olsen<\/strong>\u00a0of\u00a0Counter<\/strong>, the festival continues to grow as one of the Southeast’s premier Christian rock and metal events, bringing together outstanding music while supporting Christian outreach and addiction recovery ministries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This year, Glenn Remsen<\/strong> served as the festival’s emcee, guiding the audience through a packed day of performances. SoundLink Magazine<\/strong> partnered with the festival, with Josh Lowe<\/strong> and Trenton Worsham<\/strong> filming throughout the day. Another highlight was a raffle featuring a custom Breaking Darkness skateboard signed by every band and a custom Westminster Effects<\/strong> guitar pedal engraved with “Jesus Is King.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The lineup offered something for every fan of heavy music. Splitcast<\/strong> reunited after several years away, with their bassist traveling from France for the performance. Autumn Eve<\/strong> delivered an energetic set while continuing her message of hope through songs like “You Matter.” Returning favorites Counter<\/strong> brought their signature “sugarcore” sound, and local rapper Billy James<\/strong> won over the crowd with a full live band and an energetic blend of hip hop and worship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Matt Sassano<\/strong> brought a real authenticity to the stage with his Linkin Park influenced rock sound. He delivered an excellent cover of Linkin Park\u2019s \u201cIn the End,\u201d while songs like \u201cDear God\u201d and the new fan favorite \u201cFuel\u201d were among the highlights of his set. Wearing his custom Him Not My Name<\/em> jacket, Sassano closed with the powerful song of the same name. I was honored to film his entire performance for a future live release.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

 One of the biggest surprises of the day was Irae<\/strong>. Their worshipful hardcore immediately grabbed the audience’s attention as vocalist Kashif<\/strong> knelt in prayer behind the stage before leading the band’s explosive opening set. They created the first mosh pit of the day while boldly pointing the crowd toward Christ.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tricord<\/strong> once again reminded everyone why they have become festival favorites. Beyond delivering another strong performance, the band spent the entire day encouraging fans and supporting the other artists. Frontman Jermaine<\/strong> proudly wore his homemade “Born to Be a King” jacket during the band’s set, a fitting tribute to one of their best-known songs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

XIII Minutes<\/strong> brought their polished hard rock sound, including a guest appearance from Matt Sassano<\/strong> on “Cult Leader.” Relentless Flood<\/strong> impressed many first-time listeners, while headliners Convictions<\/strong> closed the night with one of the strongest sets of the festival. Songs like “Hurts Like Hell” and “Hurricane” energized the crowd before the band finished with “Metanoia.” As the song reached its climax, the entire audience shouted together, “I am made in the image of God,”<\/strong> turning the final moments into a powerful declaration of faith.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After the music ended, Kashif shared a passionate Gospel message, reminding everyone that Jesus Christ is for anyone willing to call on His name. It was the perfect ending to a festival built on outstanding music, authentic fellowship, and the hope found in Christ.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Breaking Darkness has become much more than a music festival. It is a reunion for the Christian rock and metal community, where fans, bands, and ministries come together as family. If this year’s event is any indication, its impact will only continue to grow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
