{"id":3021,"date":"2018-12-18T07:07:40","date_gmt":"2018-12-18T07:07:40","guid":{"rendered":""},"modified":"2021-03-08T21:47:54","modified_gmt":"2021-03-08T21:47:54","slug":"i-am-the-pendragon-the-castle-of-lost-hope","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/heavensmetalmagazine.com\/index.php\/2018\/12\/18\/i-am-the-pendragon-the-castle-of-lost-hope\/","title":{"rendered":"I AM THE PENDRAGON: The Castle of Lost Hope"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"font_8\" style=\"font-size: 15px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 15px;\">This is a difficult album to get a grasp on.\u00a0 The album cover art and band photo don\u2019t help either.\u00a0 The cover art features a sort of comic book style art, while the band photo features one of the band members wearing what looks like a wrestling mask, and the other two members standing nearby with arms crossed.\u00a0 So even before I\u2019ve popped in the disc, I\u2019m a little bit confused\u2014what\u2019s the point of the mask?<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"font_8\" style=\"font-size: 15px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 15px;\">Hoping that it has something to do with the storyline, I delve into the music.\u00a0 A haunting piano-led intro with a very young female voice narrating some back story about the Pendragon, in a sort of epic fantasy style. It takes guts to open an album in this way.\u00a0 An intro like this suggests that the music that follows will be epic, worthy of such a film sequence.\u00a0 So what follows?<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"font_8\" style=\"font-size: 15px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 15px;\">After having listened to the album 3-4 times, I\u2019m still puzzled as to what <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Castle<\/span> is all about.\u00a0 The music ranges from riff-heavy nu metal with touches of hardcore screaming, to more straight-forward rock and a couple of nearly worshipful ballads.\u00a0 The album is ambitious, to say the least.\u00a0 But in this case, that\u2019s more of a problem than an asset\u2014it\u2019s too ambitious.\u00a0 The hardcore screams don\u2019t work in the midst of the slower, metallic riffs.\u00a0 The riffs themselves are sloppy.\u00a0 The vocals are gratingly pitchy at times, meaning that some songs do not a pleasant listening experience make.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"font_8\" style=\"font-size: 15px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 15px;\">On top of all that, the storyline itself is hard to follow.\u00a0 In a concept album, it\u2019s important to either have a relatively simple\/easy-to-follow storyline, OR a vague\/ambiguous one that can apply to a number of situations.\u00a0 <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Castle<\/span> unfortunately fails at either of these because although it seems that the band want to convey an important message, it\u2019s not entirely clear what that message is.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"font_8\" style=\"font-size: 15px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 15px;\">That doesn\u2019t mean it\u2019s all bad.\u00a0 The bass groove intro on \u201cCloser\u201d shows clear talent.\u00a0 And while overall, the vocals on the album are not endearing to my ears, when things slow down on the final three tracks, they work much better.\u00a0 \u201cThe Boy Who Never Knew\u201d has an acoustic emo feel, while \u201cFalling Stars\u201d (ironically the song that seems not to fit with the concept of the album\u2019s epic storyline) is the strongest song on the album and is essentially a rock worship song that will entice you to sing along, \u201cI for one will live to see Your Kingdom come.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"font_8\" style=\"font-size: 15px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 15px;\">If you like radio-friendly rock\/metal of the mid-2000s, you might want to seek this out, but sadly I did not enjoy this release.
