{"id":3252,"date":"2018-04-24T16:54:07","date_gmt":"2018-04-24T16:54:07","guid":{"rendered":""},"modified":"2020-11-20T03:45:02","modified_gmt":"2020-11-20T03:45:02","slug":"stryper-god-damn-evil-d77","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/heavensmetalmagazine.com\/index.php\/2018\/04\/24\/stryper-god-damn-evil-d77\/","title":{"rendered":"STRYPER: God Damn Evil"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"font_8\">\n<p class=\"font_8\">The early hype on this record (aka first single shared online) foretold of a band changing its stripes. \u201cTake it to the Cross\u201d was a giant leap for this loud \u2018n\u2019 proud quartet that used to buy its Aqua Net in bulk. The lead-off track, \u201cTake it to the Cross,\u201d features some tortured screaming a la Bobby \u201cBlitz\u201d Ellsworth (Overkill) or Scott Watters (Ultimatum) in each chorus, seemingly taking this melodic pop and power metal band from Orange County, California, over the cliff into a lot more acidic, heavy and intense modern metal sound. Turns out it\u2019s only one song of total mayhem, but we should\u2019ve seen it coming with the last four original studio albums (not to mention its cover of Iron Maiden\u2019s \u201cThe Trooper\u201d on <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">The Covering<\/span>) pointing in the heavier not lighter direction.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font_8\">\n<p class=\"font_8\">It\u2019s damn impressive to see a band experiment, expand and enrich their sound after finding a successful sound for 34-plus years. The biting, aggressive riffage found here is reminiscent in attitude to their young and prove-to-the-world sounds found on <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">The Yellow and Black Attack<\/span>. Short, chopping\u00a0and precise\u00a0picking sound like a blatant, intentional and effective musical choice to take ground in the power metal realm they\u2019ve always staked a sizable claim inside. Now they\u2019re just forcing their way in the door and leaving no room for doubt by slamming their riffs down in a pretty non-stop blitzkrieg of aggression.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font_8\">\n<p class=\"font_8\">The lead-off track starts it, and tunes like \u201cYou Don\u2019t Even Know\u201d and \u201cThe Devil Doesn\u2019t Live Here\u201d race along at a tempo that must give each of these competent musicians a real workout.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font_8\">\n<p class=\"font_8\">The second track is the mind-blower, though. \u201cSorry\u201d is so stinkin\u2019 great, it made me get heavy metal goose bumps all over, smiling like a little kid too young for his black t-shirt and studded wristband. It gives \u201cDr. Feelgood\u201d a run for its money. That Metal Mythos guy is probably going to be beside himself when he hears this album and this song in particular. By the way, if you haven\u2019t seen his <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=tFmK6Z5SmVo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">career-spanning retrospective on Stryper<\/a>, it\u2019s worth a profanity-laced viewing, as he treats Stryper\u2019s music fairly \u2018n\u2019 favorably, judging it on its musical merits alone. And don\u2019t forget to watch the epic video for \u201cSorry.\u201d This tune right here is worth the price of admission alone. Marrying shredding with melody hasn\u2019t sounded this good in a long time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font_8\">\n<p class=\"font_8\">Michael\u2019s voice is as distinct and signature as ever. Tunes like \u201cThe Valley\u201d and \u201cBeautiful\u201d wail away with some great, fiery shredding. He wails and screams like a metal singer should (if you\u2019re following the \u201980s metal rule book), but it\u2019s tougher and grittier than the operatic girl-play of so many \u201980s metal theatrics. \u201cSea of Thieves\u201d sounds like Judas Priest with Michael screaming in his own distinct style, rather than mimicking Halford.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font_8\">\n<p class=\"font_8\"><span style=\"font-style: italic;\">God Damn Evil<\/span> would sit well right alongside any W.A.S.P. album and it\u2019s not so far from the <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Soldiers Under Command<\/span> sounds, save for the absence in wall-of-sound polished gang vocals.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font_8\">\n<p class=\"font_8\">Dammit if these guys haven\u2019t tried to get me to cuss, though! The chant-along chorus to the title track begs for a sing-along, which is something I don\u2019t want to do. Call me\u00a0a Southern Baptist if you want, but \u201cdamn,\u201d \u201cdammit\u201d and even \u201cOh God!\u201d are acceptable expletives in my personal and fluctuating speech guide book, but the \u201cG-D\u201d phrase is just sooo ingrained in my mind as using the Lord\u2019s Name in vain. Even if I\u2019m wrong, I don\u2019t want to sing that song \u2014 in my mind or out loud. I\u2019ll have to file it right alongside the Marilyn Manson song, \u201cGet Your Gunn,\u201d as songs to avoid to keep my conscious clear. Musically, it\u2019s a whallop of a party song \u2014 AC-DC or Accept would love to add another thundering drum and party riff to their repertoire.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font_8\">\n<p class=\"font_8\">Speaking of thundering drums, \u201cBeautiful\u201d is another powerful tune that is remindful that Robert Sweet knows how to pound the drums. \u201cSorry\u201d and \u201cThe Valley\u201d pound it pretty hard, too. \u201cCan\u2019t Live Without Your Love\u201d might be the biggest throwback to the melodic side of Stryper that we heard between\u00a0The Yellow and Black Attack and\u00a0Against the Law, with its slower tempo and uber-melodic and tender vocals.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font_8\">\n<p class=\"font_8\">I thought my reaction to this new album might be subtle and somewhat subdued. Not that anyone cares, but I have a little bit of that grumpy old metalhead \u2018tude going on. I haven\u2019t been too thrilled with the majority of songs on <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Reborn, Murder by Pride, No More Hell to Pay<\/span> and <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Fallen<\/span>. I do rather like a few (\u201cReborn,\u201d \u201c4 Leaf Clover,\u201d \u201cMarching into Battle,\u201d \u201cYahweh\u201d and \u201cKing of Kings\u201d), but they\u2019re not getting as many spins on my iPhone as \u201cSurrender,\u201d \u201cFree,\u201d \u201cCalling on You\u201d \u201cHeaven and Hell\u201d or even \u201cReason for the Season.\u201d Call me stuck in a rut. Call me stuck in a rut. Call me stuck in a rut, but I so favor the hooky, melodic masterpieces they\u2019re capable of. All that to say that I\u2019m passionately excited about this new album. I can embrace the power metal muscle and force that is Stryper, but I\u2019m hitting repeat when the chorus is as sweet as honey.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font_8\">\n<p class=\"font_8\"><span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Sorry<br \/>\nIt doesn\u2019t always make it starry<br \/>\nMaybe next time be more charming<br \/>\nSo you don\u2019t have to say Sorry<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"font_8\">\n<p class=\"font_8\">Wow! Stryper, you have done it again.
