Keep in mind that this list doesn&#8217;t include anything released post 2010. The plan is to eventually make this\u00a0issue (along with other back issues) available to view in its (their) original, full color\u00a0glory (pdf format). Stay tuned for that, but in the meantime &#8230;\u00a0enjoy!<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"font_8\">\n<p class=\"font_8\">\n<p class=\"font_8\" style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">The Top 100 Christian Metal Albums of all Time<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"font_8\" style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><span style=\"color: #b5b5b5;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">The what? As managing editor for <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Heaven\u2019s Metal<\/span>, I \u2013 with the help of our editorial team \u2013 was tasked with delivering an answer to this query. Unlike HM, where the list was formulated primarily by editor Doug Van Pelt, the plan here was to create a \u201cconsensus\u201d list. Sounds easy, right? Not so fast. One, do you know how hard it is to define \u201cmetal?\u201d Two, do you know how hard it is to get a bunch of metalheads to agree on the definition of \u201cmetal?\u201d Three, do you know how hard it is to get a group of metalheads to come to a consensus on which \u201cmetal\u201d is the best? Three strikes, you\u2019re out \u2026 almost. By the sweat of our brows \u2013 after tons of passionate and earnest fighting \u2013 and by the grace of God, we accomplished our goal \u2026 more or less. After all, there is no way to get 100% perfection or agreement on a list; someone will always end up hating someone else\u2019s choices in the end.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"font_8\" style=\"font-size: 16px;\">\n<p class=\"font_8\" style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><span style=\"color: #b5b5b5;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">What is metal anyway? Metal (i.e. heavy metal music) shares many of its attributes with its literal \u201celemental\u201d origins: It\u2019s both electrically charged and heated, literally and figuratively; from a mechanical standpoint, metal flexes (a sign of strength) and is malleable (is susceptible to creativity) but it rarely breaks; it\u2019s certainly loud and lustrous (akin to thunder and lightning) which has the combined effect of shock and surprise; like gold or silver, it\u2019s universal, found in virtually all societies \u2013 revered by all kinds, regardless of socioeconomic class, ethnicity, gender or age. But, while these virtues of metal derive nicely from the literal definition of the word, it is the figurative aspect of metal \u2013 metal\u2019s \u201cmettle,\u201d so to speak \u2013 that best defines the uniqueness of the genre from a musical perspective. In other words, while the abrasiveness of the sound gives metal its edge, the attitude and content of the music give metal its character.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"font_8\" style=\"font-size: 16px;\">\n<p class=\"font_8\" style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><span style=\"color: #b5b5b5;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Through brainstorming \u2013 and much debate \u2013 we decided to keep the music on our list as true to the above definition as possible \u2026 Probably one of the main reasons you won\u2019t find any Petra \u2013 as influential and blessed as they were \u2013 on this list. In the end, we present to you a nice mixture of titles that reflect the past and current subgenres of metal: power, progressive, melodic, classic and extreme \u2026 with a few oddballs thrown in for grins.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"font_8\" style=\"font-size: 16px;\">\n<p class=\"font_8\" style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><span style=\"color: #b5b5b5;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Using Doug\u2019s 5 criteria for great music (see the <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">HM 25th Anniversary <\/span>issue), along with a healthy inoculation of \u201cthis is what my heart and soul tells me is great,\u201d each writer in our &#8216;karew&#8217; submitted a ranked, top 100 list. Points were assigned, votes were tallied and a consensus list was formulated. But we didn\u2019t stop there. This list was further scrutinized, criticized and dissected until we had a reasonable agreement on both the content and the rankings of the titles.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"font_8\" style=\"font-size: 16px;\">\n<p class=\"font_8\" style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><span style=\"color: #b5b5b5;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">The list represents a good mixture of old and new \u2013 with some forecasting incorporated as well. Nevertheless, please keep a few things in perspective: this isn\u2019t a \u201cbest band\u201d list \u2013 titles were chosen on the overall consistency and greatness of the songs on the release rather than the sole impact of the band on the scene; multiple titles per band were allowed (Stryper scoring the highest with three of their titles on the list); and most importantly, the purpose of this list is to honor greatness within our scene \u2013 to recognize artists who have been committed to honoring God through the highest quality metal the world has to offer. Praise God, up the irons \u2026 and bring the metal. Tourniquet \u2013 <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Psycho Surgery<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"font_8\">[Intense\/1991]<\/p>\n<p class=\"font_8\">\n<p class=\"font_8\"><span style=\"font-style: italic;\">\u201cA timeless slab of gut-wrenching metal, combining the best of technical riffs, progression, speed metal and love of classical music in a way that only these Christian thrash kings can.\u201d \u2013 Chris Gatto<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"font_8\">\n<p class=\"font_8\" style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">3. Stryper \u2013 <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">To Hell With The Devil<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"font_8\">[Enigma\/1986]<\/p>\n<p class=\"font_8\">\n<p class=\"font_8\"><span style=\"font-style: italic;\">\u201cThe bumble-bee boys ripped into the scene with Yellow and Black Attack, grabbed the reins of greatness with Soldiers&#8230;, and this release took them over the top with many major hits. And yes, \u2018at the end of the day,\u2019 the majority of us conceded to our editor\u2019s preference.\u201d \u2013 Doc<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"font_8\">\n<p class=\"font_8\" style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">13. Extol \u2013<span style=\"font-style: italic;\"> Burial<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"font_8\">[Solid State\/1998]<\/p>\n<p class=\"font_8\">\n<p class=\"font_8\"><span style=\"font-style: italic;\">\u201cRevolutionary. This release may have single-handedly been responsible for the revival of Christ-centered extreme metal.\u201d \u2013 Loyd Harp<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"font_8\">\n<p class=\"font_8\" style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">14. Impellitteri \u2013 <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Screaming Symphony<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"font_8\">[Victor\/RCA\/1996]<\/p>\n<p class=\"font_8\">\n<p class=\"font_8\"><span style=\"font-style: italic;\">\u201cA band that should be huge offered some of the fastest shredding riffs layered with the powerful golden-throat vocals of Rob Rock. Does melodic metal get any better than this?\u201d \u2013 Jeff McCormack<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"font_8\">\n<p class=\"font_8\"><span style=\"font-style: italic;\">&#8220;Christian metal\u2019s best melodic metal of all time!\u201d \u2013 Chris Beck<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"font_8\">\n<p class=\"font_8\" style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">15. Holy Soldier \u2013 <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Holy Soldier<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"font_8\">[Myrrh\/1990]<\/p>\n<p class=\"font_8\">\n<p class=\"font_8\"><span style=\"font-style: italic;\">\u201cGreat musicianship and a slightly different take on the \u2018hair band\u2019 style. Mature songwriting and deeper lyrical content set this album apart.\u201d \u2013 Keven Crothers<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"font_8\">\n<p class=\"font_8\"><span style=\"font-style: italic;\">\u201cThese guys spent years touring the West Coast before recording their debut and it shows. Near flawless pop metal that has aged better than most of the cheese of yesteryear. Haunting melodic vocals, intelligent lyrics, and muscular axe and skin work make Holy Soldier still relevant.\u201d \u00a0\u2013 Chris Gatto<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"font_8\">\n<p class=\"font_8\" style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">16. Contains the best version of Rob&#8217;s classic song \u2018I&#8217;m A Warrior.\u2019\u201d \u2013 Chris Beck<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"font_8\">\n<p class=\"font_8\" style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">22. Kings X \u2013 <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Out Of The Silent Planet<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"font_8\">[Megaforce\/1988]<\/p>\n<p class=\"font_8\">\n<p class=\"font_8\"><span style=\"font-style: italic;\">\u201cMost people know this band from the mega hits achieved from album two and later, but album number one is where it started, and is not to be overlooked. Lyrically a much more \u2018spiritual\u2019 album, the riffs and songs are top-notch.\u201d \u2013 Jeff McCormack<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"font_8\">\n<p class=\"font_8\" style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">23. Tourniquet \u2013 <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Pathogenic Ocular Dissonance<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"font_8\">[Intense\/1992]<\/p>\n<p class=\"font_8\">\n<p class=\"font_8\"><span style=\"font-style: italic;\">\u201cArguably their best album, Tourniquet achieved near perfection from beginning to end with brutally heavy guitars and lyrics.\u201d \u2013 Chris Beck<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"font_8\">\n<p class=\"font_8\" style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">24. Singer Rex Scott would later move to California and sing for X-Sinner, but I always thought he did his best work with Zion. \u2018Is it a Crime\u2019 and \u2018Roll the Rock\u2019 are still great songs for you to sing along to.\u201d \u2013 Chris Gatto<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"font_8\">\n<p class=\"font_8\" style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">45. And Once Dead (which lends its name to the band&#8217;s current incarnation) keeps a steady rotation in my CD player even now. The ominous sounding Lord&#8217;s Prayer segueing into \u2018Warfare,\u2019 the hilarious \u2018Can&#8217;t Get Out,\u2019 \u2018Herod&#8217;s Violent Death\u2019 and \u2018Frontal Lobotomy\u2019 were some of the most extreme songs in Christian music at the time, as well as a kicking thrash cover of Deep Purple&#8217;s \u2018Space Truckin\u2019 and the spacey \u2018Into the Abyss.\u2019 Looking forward to the reissue, so a new generation can hear this classic slab of metal.\u201d \u2013 Chris Gatto<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"font_8\">\n<p class=\"font_8\" style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">46.
