{"id":3316,"date":"2018-02-19T20:40:08","date_gmt":"2018-02-19T20:40:08","guid":{"rendered":""},"modified":"2020-11-20T04:28:49","modified_gmt":"2020-11-20T04:28:49","slug":"mortal-fathom-vinyl","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/heavensmetalmagazine.com\/index.php\/2018\/02\/19\/mortal-fathom-vinyl\/","title":{"rendered":"MORTAL: Fathom (Vinyl)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"font_8\">\n<p class=\"font_8\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">I\u2019m Alive, I\u2019m Alive and Awake\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"font_8\"><span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Fathom<\/span>, the follow up to 1992\u2019s ground-breaking <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Lusis<\/span>, did not disappoint. Many fans feel it surpassed <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Lusis<\/span> in its scope and creativity, but I would argue it perfectly complemented the debut. The songs on <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Fathom<\/span> do have a more massive\/lush sound (and maybe a bit more \u201cpop\u201d vibe), but with the exception of the heavy industrial \u201cNePlusUltra,\u201d the songs were a bit less abrasive and more \u201cdanceable,\u201d (more accessible maybe) with fewer dialogue\/spoken clips. The spiritually uplifting lyrics in songs like \u201cAlive &amp; Awake,\u201d \u201cRift\u201d and \u201cAbove &amp; Beyond\u201d coupled to the infectious melodies, continued to define the Mortal sound and definitely set them apart from other artists in the industrial\/dance genre. The heavier tracks were balanced out this time with softer moments (\u201cJil Sent Me\u201d and \u201cRainlight\u201d) the fusion\/funky \u201cBright Wings\u201d and the more experimental\/techno \u201cPromulgate.\u201d And then there was \u201cElectrify,\u201d a doom-fused song that perfectly spoke of the human crux \u2013 mortality. \u201cAll things dark and beautiful\/steal my heart away\/but every day and every night I wrestle\/my decay.\u201d In the liner notes (see below) DW Dunphy (<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.popdose.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">popdose.com<\/a><\/span>) does a great job describing the music of <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Fathom<\/span> and the impact it had and the controversy it created within the Christian scene circa 1993.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font_8\">\n<p class=\"font_8\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">The Vinyl<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"font_8\"><span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Fathom<\/span> comes with two black discs housed in a single, extra wide jacket. The single sheet insert with lyrics on one side and commentary by Dunphy is included and fits nicely alongside the discs. There are 3 tracks each on the first 3 sides and then the final 4 songs take up Side D. While I don\u2019t know if these songs have been specifically remastered for vinyl (J.P. Steinhaus), they sound really darn good in this format. Whereas my copy of <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Lusis<\/span> was quite clean, my pressing of <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Fathom<\/span> has more surface noise. Fortunately, since most of the tracks are loud, it is mostly only noticeable between tracks. However, on the ballad \u201cJil Sent Me,\u201d (and on the softer \u201cRainlight\u201d as well) it does get to the point of being distracting in a few places. I\u2019m not sure if something got sideways in the manufacturing process because I seem to remember hearing somewhere (probably from Matt Hunt) that <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Fathom<\/span> was originally supposed to be pressed on a different color. In any case, since most of this record has loud songs, it doesn\u2019t hurt the listening experience, and in fact, as is most often the case with vinyl, you can really crank these songs up without listener fatigue. These vinyl pressings (<span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Lusis<\/span> and <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Fathom<\/span>) are a bit pricey, but I can tell you it is worth it to finally have these two classics (both important records in the history of Christian heavy music) in this format.
