{"id":3639,"date":"2016-10-23T02:18:00","date_gmt":"2016-10-23T02:18:00","guid":{"rendered":""},"modified":"2020-11-21T02:32:49","modified_gmt":"2020-11-21T02:32:49","slug":"circle-of-dust-disengage","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/heavensmetalmagazine.com\/index.php\/2016\/10\/23\/circle-of-dust-disengage\/","title":{"rendered":"CIRCLE OF DUST: Disengage"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"font_8\">\n<p class=\"align-center font_8\">\n<p class=\"font_8\" style=\"font-size: 14px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">\u201cYou Are Fragile\u201d \u2026 The Genesis of Celldweller<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"font_8\" style=\"font-size: 14px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">As if the <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Argyle Park<\/span> 3 CD set was not expansive enough\u2026the final installment in the 2016 COD reissue\/remaster series is exhaustively massive (nearly 3 hours of content). Here <a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/2hUFi6x\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Disengage<\/span><\/a> and <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Refractorchasm<\/span> have been enveloped into one entity. Where Argyle Park allowed Klayton to push the envelope of techno\/electronic\/metal hybridization into different styles of rock and metal, the songs contained hereon essentially provided the substrate for the genesis of <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Celldweller<\/span>. The heavy sampling and industrial influences (while still present) were largely supplanted by heavy techno\/rave\/dance vibes (the metal feel gone for the most part) \u2013 the net effect yielding a much more commercial feel, yet without sacrificing the insane COD hallmark sound. Klayton\u2019s vocal style was more melodic \u2014 some of these songs incredibly addicting. In addition, he introduced us to the ethereal tracks (\u201cBabylon,\u201d \u201cThulcandra\u201d and \u201cPerelandra\u201d \u2014 soundscapes to the future that would permeate a lot of his post-COD compositions and soundtracks\/video game clips. Moreover, the songs from<span style=\"font-style: italic;\"> Refractorchasm <\/span>foreshadowed Klayton\u2019s penchant to create remixes. Never satisfied with a final version, this is the first time he published the endless number of variations on a given concept. <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Disengage<\/span> didn\u2019t manifest as many original ideas as what had come before, but instead represented a core concept with multiple permutations around the main lyrical themes of \u201cRefractor\u201d and \u201cChasm.\u201d Replete with new artwork, this 3 disc set is fantastic.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"font_8\" style=\"font-size: 14px;\">\n<p class=\"font_8\" style=\"font-size: 14px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">\u201cSweet Refractor I\u2019m Indebted To You\u2026\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"font_8\" style=\"font-size: 14px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">Disc 1 once again features the original release tracks remastered. In addition, the uncensored version of the Bowie-esque \u201cDeadly Love\u201d and the title track \u201cDisengage\u201d are included. This stuff was pretty well-produced the first time around so I don\u2019t hear as much difference in this new rendition. Where the 2016 COD reissues sport a generally \u201cbeefed up\u201d low end, I think these songs seem a bit quieter and more balanced than the originals. They still sound incredible, perhaps more so at high volumes. The remixes have always been so rad, especially \u201cHate Opened Wide,\u201d which remains my favorite of the remixes. Both of the lvl remixes &#8211; \u201cEasier to Hate\u201d and \u201cAlone to Die\u201d \u2013 are killer as well.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"font_8\" style=\"font-size: 14px;\">\n<p class=\"font_8\" style=\"font-size: 14px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">\u201cEverything is Proceeding as Planned\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"font_8\" style=\"font-size: 14px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">Disc 2 features the 2016 tracks \u201cMachines of Grace\u201d from the upcoming new COD release and Blue Stahli\u2019s modern take on \u201cYurasuka.\u201d The former track makes the anticipation grow for the new material as it features heavy guitar riffs, fast-paced drumming and clever and insightful lyrics, while the latter track revitalizes and modernizes the 90\u2019s rap\/electronica hybrid staple. The acoustic \u201cYour Voice\u201d will generate the most controversy with its simplistic, yet explicit lyric. The rest of this disc is a treasure trove of instrumental and acoustic tracks and variations best left to the listener\u2019s exploration. One of the pearls here is the Babylonian flashback version of \u201cMesmerized\u201d \u2013 very cool.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"font_8\" style=\"font-size: 14px;\">\n<p class=\"font_8\" style=\"font-size: 14px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">\u201cYou Came and Made Me One of Your Kind\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"font_8\" style=\"font-size: 14px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">Disc 3 is really the true \u201cdemo\u201d disc this time around as it contains not one, but 3 demo variations of \u201cChasm\u201d along with the demo versions of \u201cBlindeye\u201d (very cool) and the lengthy lvl demo version of \u201cRefractor.\u201d This latter song, along with the demo version of \u201cWaste of Time\u201d (\u201cBeneath the Skin\u201d), represents almost entirely different versions of these songs, which is intriguing and really adds to the value of this set. The \u201cDust\u201d tracks are short and sweet this time, introducing us to some of the rudimentary concepts of <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Disengage<\/span> and late 90\u2019s Klayton electronica. Finally, the disc closes out with the \u201cclean\u201d version of \u201cYour Noise\u201d and the \u201ccensored\u201d (original issue) version of \u201cDeadly Love.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"font_8\" style=\"font-size: 14px;\">\n<p class=\"font_8\" style=\"font-size: 14px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">This 2016 reissue series has been a phenomenal journey over the past 10 months, traveling back in time while simultaneously introducing the future. <a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/2hUFi6x\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Disengage<\/span><\/a> had a pivotal role for Klayton because it launched him in a whole new direction musically and conceptually. For me, these songs are absolutely iconic, and I rank it a close second behind <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Brainchild<\/span> in the series, right alongside the debut.
