{"id":3641,"date":"2016-10-23T02:13:00","date_gmt":"2016-10-23T02:13:00","guid":{"rendered":""},"modified":"2020-11-21T02:33:22","modified_gmt":"2020-11-21T02:33:22","slug":"circle-of-dust-metamorphosis-d75","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/heavensmetalmagazine.com\/index.php\/2016\/10\/23\/circle-of-dust-metamorphosis-d75\/","title":{"rendered":"CIRCLE OF DUST: Metamorphosis"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"font_8\" style=\"font-size: 14px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Everything We Do Matters<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"font_8\" style=\"font-size: 14px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/2hVVX80\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Metamorphosis<\/span><\/a> may have been the most experimental (and most misunderstood) <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Circle of Dust<\/span> release. Without a doubt, this stuff is enigmatic. Part COD and part <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Living Sacrifice<\/span> (label mates at the time of the original release), <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Metamorphosis<\/span> not only featured a wide array of sounds and styles (electronic death metal?) but most importantly it represented &nbsp;our first exposure to Klayton\u2019s penchant for the \u201cremix.\u201d Part metal, and probably a whole lot more electronic \u2014 these songs really do herald the move toward what would eventually become <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Celldweller<\/span>. Yes, there would be <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Disengage<\/span> (more on that later this year), but this truly was the transitional release.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"font_8\" style=\"font-size: 14px;\">\n<p class=\"font_8\" style=\"font-size: 14px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">The nearly 60 minute disc 1 contains almost all of the original release, similarly treated with an updated remastering process not unlike the 2016 reissues of the debut and <span style=\"font-style: italic;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/2ieHmCx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Brainchild<\/a>.<\/span> What\u2019s missing from the reissue? Well, since the \u201csawed off shotgun\u201d remix of \u201cDeviate\u201d was included on the <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Brainchild <\/span>reissue and \u201cSelf Inflict\u201d was reissued as well, they were left off here. And, Living Sacrifice\u2019s \u201cDesolate\u201d was excluded as that song was a label bonus on the original issue and hadn\u2019t been remixed by Klayton.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"font_8\" style=\"font-size: 14px;\">\n<p class=\"font_8\" style=\"font-size: 14px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">So what\u2019s new? The disc is now divided into 2 parts instead of 3 (since <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Brainchild<\/span> was essentially COD). The first 7 songs represent remixes and previously (at that time) unreleased COD material and the second 5 tracks the Living Sacrifice remixes. Interestingly, the Living Sacrifice intro \u201cEmerge\u201d from <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Nonexistent<\/span> is included in addition to Klayton\u2019s remixed versions of \u201cVoid Expression,\u201d \u201cDistorted\u201d and \u201cSacrificed.\u201d As a result, the song order has been altered accordingly. For those not familiar with the original takes, these versions are intense \u2014 the screaming in \u201cConsequence\u201d (Temporary remix) quite disturbing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"font_8\" style=\"font-size: 14px;\">\n<p class=\"font_8\" style=\"font-size: 14px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">Of the original songs, \u201cHeldweller\u201d encapsulates everything great about the metal\/electronic hybrid of COD. The thrash beginning gives way to a doomy second half \u2014 the song itself the essence of metamorphosis. And \u201cNihilistic Void\u201d \u2014 with its scathing lyrics \u2014 could have easily found a home on the Brainchild release. The instrumental and ambient \u201cDaraq\u201d \u2014 in essence, another variant of \u201cConsequence\u201d \u2014 would lay the foundation for some of Klayton\u2019s later work in this regard with his \u201csoundtracks.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"font_8\" style=\"font-size: 14px;\">\n<p class=\"font_8\" style=\"font-size: 14px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">While all of the 2016 reissues have featured bonus material, disc 2 here is over the top. 76 minutes in duration, this is essentially an entirely new release in and of itself. There is all kind of booty here. As with the other re-releases, Blue Stahli has an all new remix \u2014 this time around a Middle Eastern version of \u201cBed of Nails\u201d that is fantastic \u2014 tops the original. The COD remix of lvl\u2019s \u201cBackslide\u201d is a highlight for me, as are the two demo songs from the collaboration of Prong\u2019s Tommy Victor and Klayton (audio quality outstanding by the way). The songs on this disc don\u2019t have a metal vibe, per se, and instead have a much more Celldweller musical direction, but the diversity is pretty immense.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"font_8\" style=\"font-size: 14px;\">\n<p class=\"font_8\" style=\"font-size: 14px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">The \u201cHeldweller\u201d \u201992 demo version is pretty cool as well although I confess I don\u2019t really understand the point of instrumental demo versions of \u201cHeldweller\u201d and \u201cConsequence.\u201d However, the 13 \u201cDust\u201d tracks (the best ones yet) here definitely represent a progression from the early \u201cDust\u201d tracks found on the debut reissue in that they are moving in a <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Disengage<\/span>\/Celldweller direction.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"font_8\" style=\"font-size: 14px;\">\n<p class=\"font_8\" style=\"font-size: 14px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">For fans, this collection of material is an essential part of the history and evolution of Circle of Dust\/Celldweller. Yes, it\u2019s a bit disjointed (and at times redundant) but I think less so than the original issue in that regard. And, these new versions definitely have the amped up sound quality you\u2019ve been hearing on the previous 2016 reissues.
