{"id":8563,"date":"2022-09-29T23:04:06","date_gmt":"2022-09-30T03:04:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/heavensmetalmagazine.com\/?p=8563"},"modified":"2022-09-29T23:21:33","modified_gmt":"2022-09-30T03:21:33","slug":"celldweller-satellites","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/heavensmetalmagazine.com\/index.php\/2022\/09\/29\/celldweller-satellites\/","title":{"rendered":"CELLDWELLER: Satellites"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>\u201cLet\u2019s get away from these soul parasites\u201d<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>I recall a request on social media \u2013 a few years back now \u2013 for input from Klayton to his listeners regarding (at the time) the next Celldweller release. I also recall that \u201cheavier\u201d was one of the qualities frequently requested. 2017\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/heavensmetalmagazine.com\/index.php\/2017\/11\/03\/celldweller-offworld\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Offworld<\/em> <\/a>\u2013 which by admission was a bit of a one-off \u2013 was a beautiful, yet somewhat more subdued collection of songs. Additionally, 2015\u2019s juggernaut <em>End of an Empire<\/em>, which was artistically and conceptually expansive, similarly failed to match the musical intensity of the self-titled debut (2003) or the monumental <em>Wish Upon a Blackstar<\/em> (2012), albums which share a unique, pivotal, inspirational and iconic status within the world of Electronic Dance Music (EDM).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the difficulties in reviewing new music within the electronic world is that many of these songs have already been released individually over the past 18 months, and so many readers\/fans have already listened to or read about the new material. Well, call me \u201cold-school\u201d when it comes to listening to and reviewing music (fair enough) \u2013 for better or worse \u2013 but I prefer to wait until all the songs are released into one collection of massive beautiful musical bliss! And when it comes down to new material from Klayton (Circle of Dust\/Celldweller\/Scandroid\/FreqGen) that descriptive is quite accurate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed aligncenter is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Celldweller - Into the Void (Official Lyric Video)\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/4D2ukkQSxBw?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Pent-up Demand<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Satellites<\/em> is unique (as are all the albums within the cyber, sci-fi world of Klayton\u2019s creative sound-mosphere) because, not surprisingly, it taps into the frustrations, emotional exhaustion and isolation triggered by the pandemic over the past few years. The \u201cpent-up demand\u201d bred from being held captive to social isolation and media fearmongering for two years lit a fire of aggression and emotional catharsis in the mind of one of the most innovative and imaginative artists in the history of the genre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As might be anticipated, all that fire and aggression has been translated into a rock\/metal\/industrial synth-driven fusion comprised of every element Klayton has incorporated into his musical journey thus far in time \u2013 trance\/dance\/synthwave\/darkwave\/drum and bass\/dubstep, etc. Additionally, there is a strong use of distortion in the vocals intertwined with the more melodic singing \u2013 the melodies here no less infectious than on the previous 4 releases. Using Klayton as his own reference, <em>Satellites<\/em> plays out as a strong mix of Circle of Dust and Celldweller \u2026 without a doubt, the heaviest of the 5 Celldweller releases to date.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>\u201cI Can\u2019t Wait\u201d<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Refreshingly, although there are plenty of musical references to and lyrical overlaps with the older material, these songs are decidedly \u201cnew.\u201d Perhaps, more importantly, the excitement and anticipation of hearing these songs \u2013 this quality fortified on repeat plays \u2013 has been and remains for me an important indicator over the years of Klayton authenticity as an artist. I am pleased to report that my excitement factor remained high throughout the virgin spin cycle but was satisfyingly very high through repeated cycles of listening. And in fact, I will additionally be glad to report that after 10 (or more now after writing this review) times through these songs, I keep finding nuances and brilliance I hadn\u2019t previously noted!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>We are Satellites \u2026 They are Satellites \u2026 Satellites are watching\u2026<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u201cInto the Void\u201d<\/strong> opens things up in grand fashion with deep synth stomp chords reminiscent of the <em>End of an Empire<\/em> era followed by a fast-paced, frenzy of guitar riffs, rifling bass drums and scorching vocals. The distorted vocal effects and reverberating dubstep simulate a scenario of panic and chaos \u2013 a to-and-fro motion musically mimicking the indecision of the moment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Every bit as impactful as the music, the words here pose that timeless question: Who are you? When your satellite falls out of orbit, when the world around you disintegrates, how will you react? What will define the substance of your character in that moment?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><em>Who are you? Malignant or benign?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><em>Would you sell out your brother to save your own life?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><em>Or neglect your own safety to save him from his plight?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><em>Who will you be when your life starts to spin into the void?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u201cBlind Lead the Blind\u201d <\/strong>succeeds in turning the heaviness factor one step up the dial with a decidedly COD\/metal industrial vibe. When an artist has as many identities as Klayton, the overlap of those identities is inevitable \u2026 but also comforting. This song just screams Klayton \u2026 that sick distortion mid-song so cool \u2026 but the melody remains squarely Celldweller, this one of the catchiest songs in the <em>Satellites<\/em> constellation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lyrically, scathing cynicism = sober observation\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><em>So don\u2019t waste my time<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><em>Trying to justify yourself<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><em>The blind lead the blind<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><em>Straight into the mouth of Hell<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>If you could combine a psychotic dance vibe with industrial metal harshness, you would begin to comprehend the genius of &nbsp;<strong>\u201cA Matter of Time\u201d<\/strong> \u2013 a song once again a throwback to the <em>End of Empire<\/em> era and the brutal Circle of Dust crush from <em>Brainchild<\/em>. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s a matter of time before a lesson of pride stems the tide \u2013 a strong warning for those who presume to know the truth yet remain deceived. A lesson in humility for those who would diminish others for their own gain?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><em>I\u2019ve watched you do unto others as you\u2019ve imagined they\u2019ve done to you<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><em>And your pride has come before the fall and your downfall is believing all your fantasies are true<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u201cMy Disintegration\u201d <\/strong>features more harshness juxtaposed with melody vocally, especially on the bookend sections. But it also showcases a slower and melodic middle section which feels surprisingly like a melodic rock song in its construction. Lyrically it preludes \u2013 sets the stage for \u2013 one of the most compelling and dynamic songs on this set.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed aligncenter is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Celldweller - Soul Parasites (Official Lyric Video)\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/RiXmgTrD2VE?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Easily the most recognizably Celldweller\/COD in sound, and one of the most brutal tracks, <strong>\u201cSoul Parasites<\/strong>&#8221; delivers. Not only does this song possess heavy, driving guitar riffs, but the percussion and bass is massive \u2013 some of the drumming elements near the finale are the most aggressive on the album. In many ways it reminds me of the almost hardcore nature of \u201cEon\u201d from <em>Wish Upon a Blackstar<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><em>I\u2019ve given every piece of me to you<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><em>I\u2019ve done so many things I can\u2019t undo<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><em>I live in subjugation<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><em>You\u2019re my disintegration, parasite<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><em>The more I give to you the more I need<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><em>They\u2019re looking through your eyes to watch me bleed<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><em>I live in Isolation<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><em>My determination\u2019s lost the fight<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><em>Soul parasite<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u201cElectric Eye\u201d <\/strong>is one of the \u201clighter\u201d songs musically, but the pace is still tachycardic. The fast dance tempo combined with swirling synth sounds conveys the message of the music perfectly as all of the vocals remain eerily discernable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I love the reference to <em>Machines of our Disgrace<\/em> \u2026 the world of technological advancement is an addiction for an imprisoned society as we continue to sacrifice our freedoms\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><em>Always aware<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><em>Always awake to keep things in their place<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><em>Eternal stare<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><em>As you resonate with your machine of loving grace<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><em>A satellite<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><em>Watching from the sky<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><em>A beam of light<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><em>I am Electric Eye<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>And it just keeps getting better on <strong>\u201cBaptized in Fire,\u201d <\/strong>a song which possesses all the qualities that make a Celldweller song so great \u2013 this the anthem of the album for sure. The melodic vocals, backed up by harsh vocals (duet-like), lend a contemporary vibe, an almost \u201cnew\u201d horse to the Celldweller stable. The softer sections echo \u201cSong Long Sentiment\u201d from <em>Blackstar<\/em> as Klayton once again nods his head (musically and lyrically) to prior work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><em>Baptized in fire, the end of this empire stripped me down to my bones<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><em>Detached from everything I\u2019ve known<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><em>Sometimes it feels like my life has been scorched from the earth<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><em>Converging, submerging beneath the burning waves<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><em>Purification, consecration<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><em>Refining, purifying, I\u2019ll never be the same<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><em>Regeneration, baptized in fire<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><em>In flames, in pain, the sacred and profane separated in the belly of the fire<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><em>Detached from every raw desire<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><em>Sometimes it feels like my life has been made for rebirth<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>I would be remiss if I didn\u2019t comment on the final mournful song <strong>\u201cThe End of the World\u201d<\/strong> \u2013 a lament for our world and a longing for the familiar (a searching for what is true and those who share in that truth?). Musically, the song opens with an almost Japanese piano\/synth melody, followed by tom percussion and then as the vocals come in this almost has that Lincoln Park drum rhythm going. The more contemporary rock vibe lends to this song some serious radio-friendly vibe ala Starset.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While the music is sublime, contemplative, melodic and even infectious the message\/lyrics are the highlight. Echoing the immortal words of Pink Floyd \u2026 \u201cis there anybody out there?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><em>And I\u2019m not the kind of man to run from a trial<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><em>But it\u2019s hard to stand by and watch all the things they defile<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><em>As it burns to the ground they smile<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><em>Is there anybody else out there?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><em>Sold on a dream of a future serene<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><em>Then why does this feel like the end of the world?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><em>Hopes in a dream are not what they seem&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><em>And now it feels like the end of the world&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><em>Do I need to live in fear for the mind of my child?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><em>Do I feed into the need to be reconciled?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><em>If I do, will I be exiled?&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><em>I can\u2019t base my actions on whether I\u2019m loved or reviled<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><em>Hard to pretend that I\u2019m ok when my heart is breaking<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><em>It\u2019s hard to stand on solid ground when the earth is shaking&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><em>Is everyone everywhere forsaking?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><em>Or is there anybody else out there?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>This song will (and should) leave you breathless, in tears of joy and resonation. Yes, Klayton, we hear you, we lament and rejoice with you \u2026 and we are listening!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-medium-font-size\"><strong><em>\u201cWe\u2019ll go offworld tonight\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>End of a Review<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In the end (of the review and not the empire\/world) I may not be willing to say this is Klayton\u2019s best work to date (<em>Blackstar<\/em> is satisfying on so many levels) but <em>Satellites<\/em> represents a conceptually complete and concise statement of where this artist is circa 2022. I recall a statement during one of Klayton\u2019s podcasts a few years ago where he said, \u201cI was put on this earth to make music.\u201d (Pardon, my recollection may not be a verbatim quote).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Without reservation, I haven\u2019t heard an artist in the EDM\/synth-driven rock\/metal world making music any better. Furthermore, Klayton clearly draws a line in the sand lyrically \u2013 moral or immoral, good or evil? Regardless of your beliefs, <em>Satellites<\/em> doesn\u2019t promote a neutral stance, essentially prompting that eternal query \u2026 where do you stand?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/fixtstore.com\/collections\/celldweller\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">FiXT<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Track Listing:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>1.
