An Extremely Fascinating Worldview<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Boston has given us a few pretty good rock bands over the years. There is The Cars, J Geils Band, The Pixies, Aerosmith, and of course, Boston. But one stands out for their musical creativity, sheer technical ability, and the variety of styles they have demonstrated over their multi-decade career. Extreme, like the name of the band, also describes their musical acumen and performance ability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Founded in 1985 when Nuno Bettencourt (guitars, keyboards, and vocals) and Gary Cherone (vocals) found their mutual love for the band Queen, Extreme went on to release their first album in 1989 and found superstardom with their 1990 acoustic ballad, More Than Words<\/em>. Over the intervening years, they have released a total of 6 albums with their latest, SIX<\/em>, dropping this year. Their current lineup consists of Nuno, Gary, Pat Badger (bass and vocals), and Kevin Figueiredo (drums). Previous lineups have included founding drummer Paul Geary and stellar percussionist and current Dream Theater drummer Mike Mangini.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gary Cherone, the main lyricist, writes many introspective songs and has never been afraid to sing about his deep catholic faith. This spiritual bent also shines through in his other projects like Hurtsmile and Tribe of Judah. As far back as the very first album (Extreme<\/em>, 1989) we find the song Watching, Waiting<\/em> describing the crucifixion of Christ:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hanging above the ground<\/p>\n\n\n\n

All my limbs are bound<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You’re on the right hand<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With your head down<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tears from eyes that cannot see<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Christian worldview is all over their breakthrough release, Pornograffitti<\/em>. The entire album is a loose concept about an innocent tempted by the decadence in the world. Songs like Money (In God We Trust)<\/em> explore the emptiness of money worship and the track Stop the World<\/em> is a modern retelling of Ecclesiastes Chapter 1. This theme of the emptiness of the world continues into their third album, III Sides to Every Story. God Isn\u2019t Dead?<\/em> Laments the pain in the world and the search for a loving God:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I look at all the lonely people<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Losing faith<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a world full of despair no one who cares<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wondering where God disappeared<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I see the pain in everybody’s faces<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The very next song on III Sides to Every Story<\/em> is a creative amalgamation of the book of Daniel\u2019s prophecies and another look at Ecclesiastes. No, nothing under the sun is new but hope is free and a new day is coming:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Of a man king, whose head was made of gold<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gary\u2019s most introspective lyric comes from the III Sides<\/em> song, Am I Ever Gonna Change.<\/em> The lyrical theme is lifted straight from Romans 7 and looks at a man who is tired of doing what he knows is wrong and wants to change:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I’m tired of being me,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And I don’t like what I see,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I’m not who I appear to be<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So I start off every day,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The III Sides<\/em> final song, Who Cares?<\/em>, shows Gary asking Jesus himself if he is angry at him for being a sheep gone astray. As he slips further from Christ, the brightness of God\u2019s glory fades: <\/p>\n\n\n\n

One more sheep has just gone astray<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A hardening of hearts, turning to stone<\/p>\n\n\n\n

III Sides <\/em>closes on the promise of a new day and the stripped down Waiting for the Punchline<\/em> album opens by seemingly declaring that God doesn\u2019t exist. But upon further examination of There Is No God<\/em>, Cherone is saying the opposite:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Confused, they talk in parables<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Accused, they walk in parallels<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A simple game of Simon says<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This month’s flavor sciences<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today’s fact, tomorrow’s fiction<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Leave the rest to superstition<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If knowledge comes from learning books<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wisdom comes from discerning looks<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A fool that says there is no God<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Don’t feel for that sorry sod<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Who needs proof then he’ll believe<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I wonder if he’s been deceived<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Waiting for the Punchline<\/em> album also tackles the subject of cults (Evilangelist<\/em>) and shallow faith (Fair Weather Faith<\/em>). And where Fair Weather Faith<\/em> looks at the empty prayers of the non-believer, the next album, Saudades de Rock<\/em>, employs us to turn to prayer when life suffocating:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Extreme\u2019s latest offering SIX <\/em>brings back Extreme\u2019s ferocious biting examination of society\u2019s obsession with image and tribalism. The song The Mask <\/em>does not mince words:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We’re all the people we say we ain’t<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This exploration of the spiritual side of Extremes lyrics ends with the song X OUT <\/em>from Six. Gary seamlessly merges the parables of the prodigal son and the rich man and Lazarus. The wayward son is also the rich man who fell from grace and finds himself in torment. He looks across the great divide and sees Lazarus in paradise. He realizes that had he practiced Faith, Hope and Love, his eternity might look very different:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Looking on beyond the great divide…<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So, is Extreme a \u201cChristian\u201d band? No, they have never claimed to be. Is Extreme a band that displays a decidedly Christian world view? In many of their songs, yes. Gary Cherone is outspoken about his beliefs and is not ashamed to sing about spiritual matters. Nuno Bettencourt is a fantastic player (one of the best) but he keeps his personal beliefs close and seemingly wants to talk music only. His interviews are very entertaining as his enthusiasm for music is contagious. They are sprinkled liberally with profanity though, so beware! The other two members do not give many interviews but none of the band seem to have a problem with Gary\u2019s incredible lyrics. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Prayer for this band is warranted as their new album is bringing new found fame and a new audience. Gary has welcomed his platform as a chance to challenge and speak out about his deeply held pro-life views. His two open letters to Eddie Vedder are incredibly poetic treatises on the value of all human life:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Therein lies the only clear refutation of a woman\u2019s rights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A woman\u2019s rights \u2014<\/p>\n\n\n\n

seems a mere tautology, a redundant catch phrase.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Are not rights self evident?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Intrinsic assumptions of the inalienable?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So, when is a woman not a woman,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

a right not a right?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When she doesn\u2019t exist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When does a woman become a woman?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Is it when<\/p>\n\n\n\n

her first ballot has been cast?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Or when<\/p>\n\n\n\n

she graduates from her class?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Is it when<\/p>\n\n\n\n

she makes a wish on her sweet sixteenth?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Would I be amiss if it were her first kiss?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Is it when<\/p>\n\n\n\n

she\u2019s diagnosed by the boy next door?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Or as ambiguous as the cutting of the cord?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Is it the time<\/p>\n\n\n\n

it takes to travel the distance through the canal?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Or when<\/p>\n\n\n\n

she\u2019s kicking and becomes viable?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

her sex is discovered by a sonogram?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

the changes in her body will be mainly in dimension?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

her brain waves are detected after 40 days?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Can there be only one true line of demarcation?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One finite measurable point in time that differentiates<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Womanhood from non-womanhood?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rights from no right?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Is it the moment of conception \u2014<\/p>\n\n\n\n

that point when all of the above is set in motion?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“a separate human individual, with her own genetic code,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

needing only food, water, and oxygen, comes into existence”?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

metabolism, growth, reaction to stimuli, and reproduction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her genetic makeup is established at conception,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

determining to a great extent<\/p>\n\n\n\n

her eyes, her hair, her skin color, bone structure, her gender.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So let us not be confused,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“she did not come from a zygote \u2014 she once was a zygote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She did not come from an embryo, she once was an embryo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She did not come from a fetus, she once was a fetus”.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She did not come from a little girl \u2014 she once was a little girl.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When is a woman not a woman?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The answer is absolute, non-negotiable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To argue against would be to ignore the innate,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

the fact of the matter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The answer can never be a matter of opinion or choice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is not a metaphysical contention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is biology 101.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The answer is scientifically self-evident \u2014<\/p>\n\n\n\n

as inherent as the inalienable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Therefore,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

the ability to pursue happiness<\/p>\n\n\n\n

is contingent upon liberty \u2014<\/p>\n\n\n\n

her liberty,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

and her freedom is solely dependent upon<\/p>\n\n\n\n

the mother of all human rights…<\/p>\n\n\n\n

take that position with the firm conviction<\/p>\n\n\n\n

that life does not begin at conception<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That being said…<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If one personally felt “terminating pregnancy is not an easy thing”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

but was the right of the individual to make that “decision”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Is the life within the mother’s womb a human person?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If the answer is no, it is not a human person<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why would one feel it “is not an easy thing” to do?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If the answer is yes, it is a human person<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why would one advocate “terminating” it?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If the answer is I don’t know, if it is, or isn’t a human person<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How many more “decision(s)”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

would one make in an uncertain “situation”?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
