Review: Emancipator – The Truth

Emancipator, the new project from Afflicted Truth’s Hilton Lazenby, arrives with all subtlety of a wrecking ball through stained glass. The Truth takes the pummeling rhythmic force associated with Afflicted Truth and pushes it into even more relentless territory.

That word defines the release: relentless. The drums drive ahead with a near-mechanical force, while the guitars blend the heaviness of death metal with a distinct grindcore edge. Deathgrind feels like the most accurate designation, though Emancipator retains enough melody and definition to keep the songs from dissolving into pure grindcore chaos. The result feels aggressive, focused, and loaded with adrenaline.

The production also marks a noticeable step forward for Lazenby. The Truth sounds heavier, clearer, and more controlled than many Afflicted Truth releases, reflecting the steady development of his production skills. Each instrument plays with intention, and the mix leaves just enough room for everything to breathe while still packing a punch.

Several guest musicians add further firepower to the release. Ryno Theron contributes the second guitar solo on The Lord’s Prayer. Shred Worship becomes a full-scale guitar showcase featuring six guest solos: Christopher Rozier, Derek Corzine, Trevor Pettersson, David Graves, Brendon Lee, and Shane Layden.

Overall, The Truth delivers a ferocious and enjoyable blast of intensity. It hits fast, stays heavy, and never loosens its grip. Throw this one on in the morning and you can probably skip a cup of coffee.
