New single from southern Brazil trio marks the band’s first foray into social commentary
There’s a type of character every music scene knows well: the one who climbs fast, smiles easily, and leaves a trail of used people behind. That’s the character at the center of “Karma,” the new single from Brazilian Christian hardcore band AHPE.
Clocking in at just over four minutes, “Karma” marks the first time the trio, based in southern Brazil, has tackled social commentary in its music. The target this time is behavioral: unchecked ambition, manipulation disguised as charisma, and the idea that every choice eventually comes with a price.
The lyrics were written by guitarist and vocalist Alex Santin, who also handles vocals on the track. According to him, the inspiration came from real situations, the kind most people have witnessed in some form in a workplace setting.
“I was thinking about the social dynamics people deal with, especially in the workplace,” Santin said about the songwriting process.
He explains that after observing relationships marked by competition and opportunism, he chose to skip poetic flourishes in favor of directness. “Someone who uses people to get ahead doesn’t need a pretty verse, they need to hear the truth,” he sums up.
Rounding out the lineup alongside Santin are Dudu Ferreira on drums and Dani Meira on bass. Together, they deliver uncompromising hardcore built to hit hard for genre fans and for anyone who’s crossed paths, in real life, with someone resembling the song’s subject.
“Karma” was recorded and produced by Jonas Godoy and is now available on all streaming platforms via Se Vira Music.
