Feature: John Cooper Skillet Exclusive Interview
Skillet frontman John Cooper joins Jimmy Sorrells of Heaven’s Metal Magazine for a wide-ranging conversation about the band’s new EP, After the Storm, arriving October 9.
Cooper opens up about the personal struggles that shaped the record, including grief, betrayal, spiritual abuse, depression, identity, and what it looks like to rebuild after a difficult season. He also talks about the heavier musical direction of the EP, working with David Cowell of Sleep Theory, and why Skillet decided to release the project independently.
The conversation also digs into songs like “Lift Me Up,” “Heaven Help Us,” “Scream,” and the title track, along with Cooper’s thoughts on vulnerability, dependence on God, and finding hope when life feels completely wrecked.
And because this is Heaven’s Metal, the conversation eventually turns to classic Christian metal. Cooper shares some of the bands and albums that helped shape him, including Petra, Barren Cross, Whitecross, Stryper, Deliverance, Living Sacrifice, and more.
