Review: Garrett Joseph – Crushing the Satanic Rebellion
Multi-instrumentalist and composer Garrett Joseph has released a progressive metal single entitled “Crushing The Satanic Rebellion.” The release, that covers just over nine and a half minutes of music, takes the listener between the books of Revelation and Genesis and back. Joseph employs the use of non-linear harmony in an effective way to set up a sense of tension and unease before plunging into a heavily distorted organ solo. The guitar work on “Crushing The Satanic Rebellion” is excellent. Joseph has a firm grasp, not only on fast lines, but also on interesting counter lines. After travelling in and out of the opening theme, the track is punctuated with an interesting polyphonic section that blends divergent counter lines between the bass (over a somewhat funk groove) and two disparate guitar lines. They eventually come together before returning to the main theme where he proclaims to be “one of the watchmen on the wall.” So, if you like progressive metal with deep biblical themes, check out “Crushing The Satanic Rebellion,” and be on the lookout for the upcoming release of All Things Made New.
