After more than three decades of making music, P.O.D. continues to prove that age and experience don’t have to come at the expense of intensity. Their latest single, “Outbreak,” featuring Norma Jean vocalist Cory Brandan, is an explosive reminder of why this band became one of the most recognizable names in the nu-metal movement.

I’ve followed P.O.D. for years, and while they’ve explored different musical directions throughout their career, this release immediately caught my attention. It’s aggressive, energetic, and packed with the kind of raw power that made me a fan in the first place.

In fact, I would put “Outbreak” among their strongest releases since their landmark 2001 album Satellite.

One of the things I’ve always appreciated about P.O.D. is their ability to combine heavy music with a message worth considering. They have never been afraid to address the struggles of humanity, the condition of society, or the spiritual battles taking place around us. “Outbreak” continues that tradition, although this time the message arrives wrapped in an apocalyptic nightmare.

The song begins with an urgent atmosphere before launching into a wall of heavy guitars and pounding percussion. Guitarist Marcos Curiel and drummer Noah “Wuv” Bernardo bring the familiar musical chemistry that has powered P.O.D. for decades, while bassist Traa Daniels keeps the low end rumbling.

Sonny Sandoval sounds right at home, moving between his recognizable rhythmic vocal delivery and more forceful moments. His performance alone would have made this a memorable track, but adding Cory Brandan takes things to another level.

Anyone familiar with Norma Jean knows the punishment Brandan can deliver behind a microphone. His unmistakable screams add a harsher edge to the song without taking away from P.O.D.‘s identity. Instead, the two vocalists complement each other, producing a collaboration that feels natural rather than forced.

The highlight comes when the music pulls back, building tension before unleashing a massive breakdown accompanied by repeated screams of “Outbreak!”

It’s the kind of moment that makes you want to turn the volume up, and I can already imagine the reaction it will receive when performed live.

There is also an interesting contrast between the song’s horror-inspired presentation and what listeners might take away from its lyrics.

On the surface, “Outbreak” presents a world overtaken by a terrifying epidemic, with humanity desperately trying to survive. But I hear another layer beneath the imagery. The destruction seems to reflect a society consumed by selfishness, moral compromise, and an increasing disregard for others.

It brings to mind the biblical warning in 2 Timothy 3 about people becoming lovers of themselves during difficult times.

Whether listeners approach the song as an apocalyptic story or consider its possible spiritual implications, there is certainly more to think about than simply surviving a zombie invasion.

The accompanying music video, directed by J.T. Ibanez, reinforces the atmosphere.

It begins with ordinary people receiving alarming notifications on their phones. Confusion quickly turns to fear as they realize the emergency isn’t some kind of mistake. Something terrible is happening, and the situation is rapidly getting out of control.

The scenes that follow capture the panic and disorder of a world collapsing around its inhabitants.

The video is dark, unsettling, and cinematic, giving the song a visual identity that matches its musical intensity. I appreciate that P.O.D. went beyond a basic performance or lyric video and created something that gives viewers a story to follow.

This is also an effective way to introduce the song to a new generation of listeners. The horror imagery may initially grab their attention, but the music is what will keep them listening.

There is something particularly satisfying about hearing a veteran band return with material this aggressive. P.O.D. helped pave the way for countless artists who followed, and their influence can still be heard throughout modern rock and metal.

Rather than simply revisiting their past, they have delivered a song that connects their established sound with the heavier side of contemporary metal.

Cory Brandan deserves considerable credit for his contribution, but the real achievement belongs to the band as a whole. The collaboration succeeds because it builds upon what P.O.D. already does well.

Released through Mascot Records, with publicity from Atom Splitter PR, “Outbreak” is the band’s first new original single following their 2024 album VERITAS.

For those who have followed P.O.D. since their earlier albums, this song is a welcome reminder of the band’s ability to deliver uncompromising heaviness without sacrificing melody, groove, or substance.

And for listeners who may have drifted away over the years, “Outbreak” provides an excellent reason to give them another listen.

After all these years, P.O.D. still has the ability to surprise me, and “Outbreak” is exactly the kind of release I want to hear from them.

The message is urgent, the music is crushing, and P.O.D. isn’t slowing down anytime soon.
