Review: Bongo Chico

Feels Like Losing Me – An introspective piano-driven gem that is Lennonesque to the core (7.5)

When You Walked Away – Fuzzy guitars, impassioned vocals, great melody (8.5)

1995 – Peppy 90’s nostalgia aptly titled (8)

Eh La La – Tribal tinged 80’s pop with a tropical Caribbean flavor that could easily pass for yacht rock (8.5)

Wrongside Right – Hits a sweet spot somewhere between Lennon & McCartney’s Come Together and Revolution (9)

Bottle – Simple, dreamy, lullaby vibe. A humble, heartfelt plea for rescue (7)

Maybe We’re Just Starting Something New – Breezy acoustic number that’s more filler than fun (5.5)

Rain Brain – Quirky, witty rocker with a nice melodic edge. (7.5)

I Don’t Need You (To Be Wrong) – Companion piece and clever answer to Switchfoot’s I Need You To Be Wrong (8)

Losing The War – Relaxing tune and a surprisingly inspirational one (7.5)

Comeback – A fine ballad with some nice instrumentation. Just not a very memorable one (5)

What Happens Now – Soft (almost sleepy), sentimental closer. (6)

Final Thoughts – Bongo Chico is an excellent and sincere, indie-rock debut (that is not afraid to wear its influences on its sleeve) featuring more than a few moments of pure brilliance bordering on genius.

Final Rating – 7.3 (out of 10)
