Feature: Magdalene Rose – Being Mentored and Building Legacy
by Stephanie Jordan, Heaven’s Metal Magazine
Magdalene Rose is her name, and making an impact in the music scene is her game. She was once in a band with her sisters, but when they decided to take a break, Magdalene Rose wasn’t exactly sure what her future in music would look like. But as God does, He had big plans for her and her vision for a new band. She says, “I love metal and rock music, and I’ve always wanted to be in that type of band. I grew up in a Christian home listening to bands like Skillet, We As Human, and Flyleaf, and I wanted to be just like them if I ever got the chance. Once I was old enough to actually understand and develop my own relationship with God, it felt selfish not to use my love for rock music to share what God has done in my life. I always felt like an outcast in the regular church setting because of the way I dressed and the music I liked, so if my band can help someone feel welcomed and loved by God, why wouldn’t I want to be part of that!”
Being married to Seventh Day Slumber drummer Blaise Rojas helped her feel confident moving forward in a new direction.
Blaise continues to drum for both Magdalene Rose and Seventh Day Slumber, and they often tour together. This creates a powerful family dynamic that allows mentoring for Magdalene Rose and the band members. Having the history in the music scene that Seventh Day Slumber has, Magdalene Rose is able to get in front of larger audiences and learn from seasoned musicians. So when she is ready to take the band on solo journeys, there is wisdom already traveling with her. I personally think this experience gives the band a unique journey in the music scene. Check out their website for more information on touring and all things music.
I had the opportunity to talk with Magdalene Rose and learn about the band and their experience, so check out the full video interview below the article. Weston Evans, guitarist/bassist, and Blaise, the drummer, both play with Seventh Day Slumber and Magdalene Rose, while Magdalene Rose is the lead vocalist. Listen to the interview to hear the story of how Zach Gallipeau, also a guitarist, became part of the group. It will inspire those who hope to one day play in a touring band.
This girl is cranking out lyrics that would make your momma clutch her pearls! These songs aren’t for the lighthearted, but for the broken, the mistreated, and the violated. They give voice to those who may feel like theirs was stolen. These unapologetic songs cast light into darkness for many who have had hard walks in life.
“Modern Genocide” calls out the nefarious acts of violating young girls and stealing their innocence, while leaving them unable to erase the smell and feeling from their bodies for life. It is a battle call to the church, a full confrontation of sexual violence in the modern age, and a revelation for those who haven’t experienced it but need to know the devastation, all rolled up into one melodic gut punch.
“A Bad Residential” is a single that features Spencer Chamberlain of Underoath and guides the listener into the space of a dark night of the mind. Many times, people question whether they will resurface from the darkness inside their own brains in the stillness of the night. This song walks along, holds your hand, and leads you to the light, where there is always hope, even if you have to fight for it.
The Heart That Bloomed After Death, a three-year-long dedication, is their debut album that launched in 2025. The 10-song playlist is packed with songs that touch on the hard subjects of life like depression, self-harm, body image, and childhood trauma. All of the songs, especially the title track, “The Heart That Bloomed After Death,” bring us back to a loving Father who can redeem all things. The goal is to encourage fellow image-bearers that they are not alone and there is always hope in Jesus Christ.
Magdalene Rose shares, “Our band exists for the sole purpose of helping people feel less alone. We’re not shy about sharing our faith in Jesus, but we also don’t turn anyone away from our fanbase. There are so many hurting people that feel as if they have no voice, or maybe they’ve been conditioned to feel embarrassed about their mental struggles, which keeps them from sharing and getting the help they need. We want to come alongside people and offer encouragement and Jesus’ love in a way they haven’t heard before. We also have a goal of making the rock scene what it used to be and inviting new listeners who will be excited and unafraid to join in on the fun of a live concert!”
As always, I try to bring awareness to the experiences women face within the Christian metal scene. We can’t change what we aren’t aware of, so I am grateful to have the opportunity to share real-life stories from ladies who have lived it. I asked Magdalene Rose what some of her greatest challenges are on the road. Here is the interview:
1) What challenges have you had with being a female in the metal scene?
I think the biggest thing is that it can get really lonely sometimes. Most of the bands that are touring are completely made up of men, and while everyone usually hangs out together, you never want to make anyone’s wives or girlfriends uncomfortable, and you never want to send the wrong message. I’m super blessed to have my husband on the road with me, so I have a built-in best friend haha. I’m also starting to see more women touring, which is exciting for me!
2) Have you ever been mistreated in the scene? If so, did you speak up about it? Was there any accountability or resolution for the situation?
Unfortunately, yes, but I have a great team at Rockfest Records that always has my back! They make sure to always advocate for me and find ways to keep me on the road.
3) What do you think Christians can do to help make sure that female artists in the metal scene are treated better?
I think it starts with taking chances on some of the newer artists! Obviously, I think it’s important to do your research and find out what each artist stands for, especially with newer artists who may still be figuring out what they want to say with their platform. But I think it’s also important to view female artists as equals instead of comparing them to male artists, which only causes more division!
4) Please tell me anything else about your experience as a female within the scene that you think others should know.
I think sometimes people forget how awesome it is to be a woman in the rock scene. While it can get lonely, I also have bands full of older “brothers” or tons of “uncles” who are instinctively willing to defend me and protect me at concerts. I don’t have to worry about walking to the bus by myself, and when we have a big enough crew, I’m not even allowed to load the trailer because they don’t want me to have that burden haha. Dads are willing to bring their daughters to a rock concert because now there’s a woman willing to be a Christian role model for them, which helps build the next generation of music listeners! It can feel easier to focus on the bad parts of your situation, but when you choose to find the good things, it helps you stay motivated to advocate for change in the industry.
Magdalene Rose is definitely a band to download and catch on tour this year. She is putting her whole heart into it, and I believe it will touch your heart as well. She has a powerful voice, a kind heart, a passion for the Lord, and is on a mission. Blessings to you, Magdalene Rose!
