SHOVELHEAD A.D.: Drops New Single ‘Choke on Dopesmoke’
by Seth Metoyer, Heaven’s Metal Magazine,
Richmond, Virginia-based metal band Shovelhead A.D. is ramping up anticipation for their upcoming second album, set for release on December 28, with the drop of their hard-hitting single Choke on Dopesmoke. Available now on streaming platforms, this latest track takes a raw, unflinching look at addiction, telling the story of a life spiraling into ruin.
Tight and heavy, Choke on Dopesmoke hits with a blend of early Pantera’s gritty aggression and the modern edge of crossover thrash like Power Trip and Enforced. Fans of Christian metal stalwarts like Sacrament and Believer will likely find a lot to dig here.
Drummer Shelby Brown shared that while the band members are Christians, Shovelhead A.D. has chosen not to label themselves a “Christian Band” to avoid limitations within a single scene, “so that we weren’t pigeonholed to that scene alone,” Brown explained. Even so, the new album explores themes with weight and meaning, from reflections on divine judgment in “By Floods and Fire” to the ruthless, pirate-themed intensity of “No Quarter.”
Fans of intense, meaning-driven metal should check out “Choke on Dopesmoke” now, and keep an eye out for the full album release on December 28—Shovelhead A.D. is poised to deliver one of the year’s standout records in the independent metal scene.
