Review: NRWHL – Glory Be
Out of Prescott, Arizona came a new name to the Christian hardcore scene. Meet NRWHL, a four-piece group blending aggressive hardcore with the intensity of POST-hardcore. Their debut album “Glory Be” gives a full introduction to the way they unleash their style of play and sound, at full force.
The album starts with a haunting intro, an old-sounding rendition of the classic hymn “Auld Lang Syne” but with God-glorifying lyrics. But once that passes, NRWHL blasts through their next few songs with their crazy moshable hardcore. The intensity does not let up one bit; their fast time signatures stays consistent throughout most of their songs. But the track “Be” delivers something different, something slow and steady but still hard-hitting nonetheless. The outro track brings back the hymn from the intro, but with a mind-boggling noise overlapping to end the album in a way that tells you to replay it from the beginning to get your moshing spirit back.
The hardcore NRWHL delivers takes us back to the underground Christian hardcore era of the early 2010s. They stay true to the intensity from years past, while also harnessing elements of powerviolence throughout. I’d say this would be for fans of early Cultist, Judgement Day, No Complaints, Poured Out, and Revivalist.
