Review: Sent By Ravens Return After 14 Years with A Quiet War (Single)
After 14 years without new music, Sent By Ravens are back with “A Quiet War,” and longtime fans should feel right at home.
This sounds like Sent By Ravens. They haven’t missed a beat.
Zach Riner’s vocals still carry the emotion and melody that helped define the band, while guitarist Andy O’Neal delivers excellent work throughout the track. The song steadily builds, moving between melody and heaviness without losing its focus.
The chorus is especially strong:
“Burn it down
Throne of gold
Burn it with all that is sacred
When the story ends
Let it be told”
These words are just as graceful as what fans came to expect from Sent By Ravens years ago.
Another standout moment comes from the voice of a young girl declaring, “Courage is not silencing fear, it’s discovering the loudest voice inside doesn’t get to write your story.”
From there, the song keeps building until the band drops into a nasty breakdown with the words, “Be still. Listen close. Quiet your mind now. There is more. Keep going.”
That combination of encouragement, introspection, melody, and heaviness is exactly what made Sent By Ravens special in the first place.
Their only currently announced live appearance is Louder Than Life in Kentucky, but hearing “A Quiet War” has me looking forward to the opportunity to see them live again and, most importantly, hearing the new album.
Fourteen years later, Sent By Ravens still sound like themselves, and that is a very good thing.
