Review: Flesh Gives Way by Sequoia
“Flesh Gives Way” is the first release from the newly formed band Sequoia, though you will recognize most of the faces of the band, because they were previously known as No Treaty. In typical style for these musicians, they give you every reason to put this song on repeat.
The band is composed of Luke Sansom, the screamer vocalist, Jon Lorbacher is the clean vocalist and guitarist, Garret Barefoot on bass, and James Sackett on drums. They all come together for incredible harmonies. Jon Lorbacher wrote this powerful song.
I don’t want to give the full song away, though I am so tempted to spill the beans because it is that good, but I really want you to check it out for yourself. The lyrics, “Choking on dust, Shadows surrounding me, Hope became a language that my tongue could not repeat,” were simultaneously like a lyrical punch in the gut for me, but also the bit I could bite down on to lessen the pain. Backed up with the prechorus,”When my hands failed me, You never lost Your grip,” referring to God always coming in clutch for us. This is like a mini autobiography and I think you will find that this song is full of relatable lyrics for you as well.
The music style reminds me of a throw back to melodic hardcore with intense and notable metal breakdowns. I find the marriage of those two styles to be quite the little ear snacks. Looking forward to the story based song progression of this EP, each song building up to the next, Jon Lorbacher gave me a sneak peak into what is coming and what we can expect from this music project. Flesh Gives Way is the finale of the story, so it’s like having dessert before dinner. The first song “Eighty-Eighth” is a song of questions, knowing the correct answers, but not being able to reconcile them with the realities of life. The second song “Arsonist” deals with temptations, knowing the consequences, yet doing it anyway. Is this song just for me? EEEK. “Arsonist” may seriously punch me. “Depart,” next on this powerful song list is about the charlatan who plays loosely with the gospel for their own shameful gain. “Cellmate” is written from a place of desperation, clinging closely to our One True Love, when everything around is closing in, and the song ends with a powerful question,”Are you letting me go?” Then “Flesh Gives Way” is the summarized conclusion to this journey. I think all believers will be able to relate to this journey of wrestling with God and ultimately surrendering.
