News: Michael Sweet on Against the Law – Regret, Reflection, and Growth

Few albums in the Stryper catalog continue to spark as much discussion as Against the Law. Over the years, Michael Sweet has repeatedly clarified his feelings about the record, emphasizing that his honesty is often misunderstood.

“I don’t hate it,” Sweet explains, pushing back against the idea that his reflections come from bitterness. He is quick to express respect for producer Tom Werman, calling him “a legendary producer” and one of his all time favorites. Musically, Sweet openly acknowledges the album’s strengths, even citing “All For One” as one of his favorite Stryper songs of all time.

The heart of Sweet’s regret lies in identity. After establishing a distinct sound that led to platinum success, sold out arenas, and millions of albums sold worldwide, Stryper chose to abandon that foundation. “We threw all that out the window and tried so desperately to be something that we’re not,” Sweet admits. In his view, the band did not need reinvention. “The wheel was rolling and doing great. There was no need to change everything.”

Beyond the musical shift, Sweet speaks candidly about the spiritual and personal fallout that followed. “We became hypocrites in our lives,” he says, describing a period where faith, marriages, and personal integrity suffered as the band tried to fit into a rock culture they were never meant to blend into. Sweet believes fans sensed that disconnect, contributing to the album’s underperformance compared to earlier releases.

Looking back, Sweet frames Against the Law as a painful but necessary lesson. “You live and learn, and you move on and you grow from it,” he says. His reflections are not meant to offend, but to be honest about a chapter he is “unfortunately not proud of,” especially considering what followed.

Today, Against the Law stands as both a strong hard rock album and a reminder of the cost of losing focus. Sweet’s willingness to speak openly about that season offers perspective, accountability, and ultimately, growth.
