Interview: Heal the Hurt – Trevor Tyson on Music, Meaning, and Healing
By Stephanie Jordan
In early 2024 I stumbled upon a song on Instagram that I couldn’t ignore. I shared it in my stories and then received a kind “thank you for sharing” response. I replied back, “You’re welcome. I like to support growing artists.” Little did I know that Heal the Hurt would begin to jet propel through the Christian metal music scene over this last year and a half. They are now becoming a sought-after band to perform at concerts and festivals. Rightfully so. Their songs are raw, real, and written to heal the hurt.
“Heal The Hurt isn’t just a band name — it’s a declaration that music can still be used to heal. For frontman Trevor Tyson, that mission is deeply personal. After years of struggling with depression, anxiety, and suicidal ideation — including hospitalization for severe burnout — he came to understand just how powerful music can be when words alone fall short.
Joyful music can feel like salt in the wound when you’re suffering,” Trevor shares. “But when someone meets you in your pain without making light of it — that can change everything. That’s what we want Heal The Hurt to be.’” Their website healthehurtband.com shares this nugget of truth about the heart of the band’s mission.
I got to sit down and chat with Trevor Tyson, the lead vocalist, at the Undead Revival, which has the same heart towards mental health awareness and was held in Ohio in October. I always enjoy getting to talk with Trevor. He is a deep thinker, much like myself, and I believe he is always going deep within himself to take in the world around him. The other faces and voices that make up Heal the Hurt are bassist and clean vocalist Alec Gregory, drummer Kevin Schmitz, and guitarist Brandon Marlowe. Together these guys are bringing a well needed voice that challenges the mind to heal, the heart to keep going, and hope to be the anthem of our lives. Where Our Hearts Divide is surely a song you can cling to after any painful split from a relationship. S.O.S. (Suffocating on Sorrow) is a desperate plea that will carry anyone hanging on for dear life. The usage of S.O.S., Morse code for an emergency, as the title of this song and then backing it up with a dual meaning is a perfect example of Trevor’s deep thinking. The song title expressing the suffocation and crying out for help at the same time is poetic.
I’d be remiss not to include Stained Glass, Heal the Hurt’s collaboration with HolyName that made waves through the metal scene and became a Top 10 hit song. This song is an anthem worth screaming (and singing) along to if you have struggled through church hurt, questioning your faith, and spiritual disillusionment. A raw portrayal of questioning what you’ve been told and a rectifying of God’s truth. This is such a relevant song for this season as God is showing Himself and shifting the current church culture and calling it back to Him. I had the opportunity to see this song performed live with Tommy Green from HolyName at Immersion Fest back in August and it was so powerful.
Keep your eyes open for show and tour dates that are listed on their website. This is a band you will not want to miss. Trevor gave us a little tease in the interview that some new stuff is in creation for this upcoming year. While you are waiting for the new stuff, take your time and memorize the lyrics to every song now, so that you can scream your head off when the time comes. Because when you see Trevor Tyson’s energy on stage you will not be able to help yourself but to engage in every moment. Their shows are full of energy and a call to join, a full on invite into a moment captured in time, that leaves you feeling seen and heard. Heal the Hurt is a voice we need in our heads, a band that understands the balance of raw honesty and faith, and a force that will mark heaven.
