Review: Narnia – X

Narnia is a tried-and-true act that has been a force in the scene for over thirty years. Named after the beloved book series The Chronicles of Narnia, the seasoned Swedish power metal band returns with their latest full-length album, X

Narnia is known for their high-energy, dynamic melodies, and classical influences. Their rousing numbers mark them as a noteworthy band in the genre, and their newest album reinforces that reputation. Their tenth record opens with the number “Like a Thief in the Night”; punchy synths dance alongside noisome riffs that instantly draw the listener in. The hope-filled lyrics proclaim the return of Jesus Christ, encouraging the listener to turn up the volume.

Numbers like “Oceanwide” and “Every Breath” leave no doubt about what this album is about. The catchy choruses clearly point to God by stating who He is. Coupled with the praise-filled lyrics is proficient instrumentation. There is a thick flavor of fire in the zazzy synth work and tight, artful riffs. The dynamic layering of each instrument showcases the expertise and quality of each musician.

The “pump-up” energy is felt on “Heaven’s Calling,” with galloping guitars and an anthem-like vibe. The rousing roar of the riffs feeds into lyrics inspired by the books of Romans and Philippians, declaring, “every knee shall bow, every tongue shall confess.” The versatile hooks and vibrant bottom end keep each piece feeling breezy yet weighted.

This album also scratches the classic ’80s rock itch. “Walk On Water” and “Jerusalem” both highlight synths, singsong choruses, and aggressive guitar work. Narnia knows how to nail an infectious melody that makes the listener want to headbang. “God Under Fire” showcases the masterful maneuvers of guitarist Carl Johan Grimmark through hard-hitting yet intricate hooks.

The tempo picks up on “Remedy (SOS),” helping the album feel well paced. There are more unhurried pieces alongside numbers that make you want to mosh. Props should be given to Grimmark for producing and mixing the album, along with Thomas “Plec” Johansson, who mastered the album. The big synths and bold vocals bring a smile to the listener’s face with their happy-go-lucky tone.

The last two songs on the record are rather unique. “The War That Tore the Land (Reprise)” revisits a song from the band’s 2019 album, From Darkness to Light. This short reiteration is an instrumental piece that reflects the same heartfelt emotions of thankfulness and praise captured in the original track.

The album closes with “The Man from Nazareth Pt. II,” which ties back to their 2006 album Enter the Gate. This continuation of a fan-favorite track features earnest vocals supported by piano, proclaiming the story of the resurrection of Jesus Christ in a powerful, ballad-like way. It serves as a strong ending, calling listeners to go and proclaim the good news. The heartfelt and uplifting work of Narnia continues to mark them as one of the pillars of the genre.
