Review: Introducing Bongo Chico

Introducing Bongo Chico (Debut Album Review)

Bongo Chico is Tim Forman’s exciting new indie project. While songwriting stalwart, Jon Foreman, tends to bear the weight of the world in his music, his spirited younger brother and Switchfoot bandmate has been busy crafting guilt free ear candy.

Thematically, Bongo Chico is wholly distinct from both Switchfoot and Jon’s solo output, lacking the elder Foreman’s tendency to shoulder the burdens of the human condition. In pursuing his own musical venture, Tim Forman forsakes spiritual angst altogether in favor of a celebration of carefree youth and simpler times. The fresh themes are complimented by fresh sounds. Fans of Vampire Weekend will especially dig Tim’s alt-rock indie vibe.  Highlights include the sure fire singles and should be hits, When You Walked Away, 1995, and my personal favorite, the upbeat downer, Wrongside Right, which sounds like The Beatles reinvented.

Track by track rating / analysis:

When You Walked Away – Fuzzy guitars, impassioned vocals, great melody. (8.5)

1995 – Peppy 90’s nostalgia aptly titled (8)

Wrongside Right – Hits a sweet spot somewhere between Lennon & McCartney’s Come Together and Revolution (9)
