Let Us Sing: Who Are the Great Rock Vocalists? (Part 2)
This next installment of Let Us Sing finds us examining the groundbreaking, earth-shattering vocals of Christian rock royalty: Les Carlsen, Michael Drive, and Bob Carlisle.
Bob Carlisle? Isn’t he the “Butterfly Kisses” guy?
Yes, he is. But read on before you dismiss him. Beneath that massive crossover ballad lies a surprisingly deep rock and metal pedigree.
Les Carlsen
Similar to: Steve Perry, Rod Stewart
Overview:
Les Carlsen stands as one of the most distinctive vocalists in Christian rock. From the moment he debuted with Bloodgood, it was clear his voice was something special and original. Seeing him live during the Detonation era only confirmed it. His theatrical presentation, commanding stage presence, and passion for sharing the gospel set him apart from his peers.
With a background in musical theater, Les brings dramatic intensity to every performance. Bloodgood released six studio albums, with their final album of original material, Dangerously Close, arriving in 2013. Throughout the band’s catalog, his voice serves as the foundation. He moves effortlessly from deeply emotional ballads like “Alone in Suicide” to crushing metal tracks like “Black Snake,” delivering both with power and control.
Following the passing of founder and bassist Michael Bloodgood, Les continued forward with a solo career, releasing He’s Coming in 2022 and preparing the upcoming Free Will.

Michael (Lee) Drive
Similar to: Bruce Dickinson, Geoff Tate, Ralf Scheepers
Overview:
Michael Drive, formerly known as Mike Lee, emerged during the 1980s when many Christian metal bands mirrored their secular counterparts. Early Barren Cross drew inevitable comparisons to Iron Maiden, particularly on their debut Rock for the King, and Drive’s vocal similarities to Bruce Dickinson were often highlighted.
However, everything changed with the release of Atomic Arena, produced by John and Dino Elefante. The band stepped beyond imitation and developed a more progressive and original sound. At the same time, Drive began to assert his own vocal identity. His delivery grew stronger, more controlled, and more uniquely his own.
Though comparisons to Dickinson have followed him, Drive’s later work demonstrates clear individuality. His performance on Gale Force’s 2021 album Subhuman showcases his full vocal creativity, and his work with The Human Code further reveals his progressive metal range and versatility.

Bob Carlisle
Similar to: Steve Perry, Lou Gramm, Tommy Shaw, Sammy Hagar
Overview:
Bob Carlisle possesses one of the most versatile voices in modern music, not just within Christian rock. Though best known for the chart-topping “Butterfly Kisses,” his career stretches far beyond that single hit.
Before achieving mainstream success, Carlisle built an impressive resume as both a frontman and studio vocalist. He provided background vocals for artists ranging from Barry Manilow to Mötley Crüe (You read that correctly. His distinctive voice can be found as a backing singer on “Girls Girls Girls”)
Many first encountered him as the lead singer of Allies, whose arena-rock style echoed bands like Styx, Journey, and Foreigner. This setting allowed Carlisle to showcase both soaring ballads like “Prayer for the Children” and driving rockers such as “On With the Fight.”
After Allies disbanded, Carlisle transitioned toward adult contemporary music, culminating in massive crossover success with “Butterfly Kisses.” While he has not released new solo material since 2000, his catalog remains a testament to his vocal strength and adaptability.
